[The Evening Psalms are 140, 141, 118 and 116 from the Syriac Peshitta Bible. The numbering of Psalms in the Syriac Peshitta is different from the numbering in popular Protestant English translations. In the popular English translations the numbers are 141, 142, 119 and 117. Also note there are minor differences between the Syriac Peshitta text and the Hebrew Masoretic text which is the source of most modern English translations]
Kyrie Elieson.
Psalms 141
Lord, I have called on you. Answer me! Listen to my words and receive them.
Let my prayer be set before you like incense; and the offering of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. Lord, set a watch before my mouth and guards at the door of my lips, that I don’t incline my heart to any evil thing, or practice deeds of wickedness.
Let me not join with men who work iniquity. Let the righteous man teach me and reprove me. Let the oil of the wicked never anoint my head. Yet my prayer is always against their evil deeds. Their judges have been restrained by [their hearts of] stone; although they heard my words, which are pleasant.
“As plough breaks up the earth, their bones are scattered by the mouth of Sheol.” Lord I have lifted up my eyes to you, and in you, I take refuge. Do not cast away my soul.
Keep me from the hands of the proud who have laid snares for me. Let the wicked fall together into their own nets, while I pass by.
Psalms 142
When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, I cried out to the Lord with my voice. With my voice I made supplication to the Lord. I poured out my complaint before him. I told him all my troubles. You know my paths.
On the path in which I walk, they have hidden snares for me. I looked to the right; and saw that there was no one who knows me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul. I cried to you, Lord; I said, “You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.”
Listen to my petitions, for I am brought very low. Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than me. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give praise to your name. Then the righteous will gather about me, because you will answer me.
Psalms 119: 105-112
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. I have sworn, and have confirmed it, that I will obey your righteous ordinances. I am afflicted very much. Give me life, Lord, according to your word. Accept the offerings of praise from my mouth, O Lord, and teach me your ordinances.
My soul is continually in your hand, and I have not forgotten your laws. Sinners have laid snares for me, yet I haven’t gone astray from your commandments. I have taken your testimonies as a heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform your ordinances forever.
Psalms 117
Praise the Lord, all you nations: praise Him, all you peoples. For His grace is strong toward us: and truly the Lord is forever.
Prayer at the end of a group of Psalms
To you belongs praise, O God. Barekhmor.
