Halperin- A Legend in His Own Mind


His own version of himself...

John J. Halperin, MD, is medical director of the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute and chair of the Department of Neurosciences at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. A gifted teacher, he is professor of neurology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He is also an attending neurologist at Overlook Hospital, Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York.

Dr. Halperin earned his BS in physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, and his MD at Harvard Medical School in Boston. His postdoctoral training included an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in Illinois, and a residency in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He completed his fellowships in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health.

His clinical interests include neuro-immunology (multiple sclerosis, myasthenia and neuropathies), nervous system infections (particularly Lyme disease), neuromuscular disease and general neurology. Dr. Halperin also attended Columbia University School of Public Health-Management Institute.

He is board-certified in internal medicine, neurology, clinical neurophysiology and electrodiagnostic medicine. Dr. Halperin’s research interests are primarily devoted to the effects of Lyme disease on the nervous system. He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles, abstracts, books, book chapters, monographs, editorials and letters concerning these and related topics.

His articles are published in scientific journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, Brain and Archives of Neurology. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Contemporary Neurology, American College of Physicians-Physicians Information Education and Resource and The Neurologist.

A sought-after speaker, Dr. Halperin has delivered numerous local, regional, national, and international invited lectures, presentations and medical Grand Rounds in his field. A fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and American College of Physicians, he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Society for Neuroscience, American Academy of Clinical Neurophysiology and the American Neurologic Association.

He has held previous teaching appointments at Harvard Medical School, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Cornell University Medical Center and the New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Halperin has been included in New York Magazine’s“Best Doctors in New York” and “Top Doctors in the United States,” and Castle Connelly’s “Best Doctors in the New York Metropolitan Area.”
