Conflicts of Interest

Concerning the ALDF-IDSA relationship

1. There are 6 overlapping members between the 14 IDSA Lyme Panel and

9 ALDF Scientific Advisor Clinicians: Wormser, Nadelman, Fish, Shapiro, Steere, Sigal (IDSA reviewer)

2. A grad student, Elizabeth Lutzker, in Durland Fish's Yale Lab

(which is funded by a CDC grant) is involved with the ALDF website.

"She is also analyzing the need for Lyme disease educated

physicians for the ALDF (American Lyme Disease Foundation)"

http://info.med.yale.edu/eph/vectorbio/fish/Templates/Elizabeth%

20Lutzker.htm

3. The CDC and Durland Fish earn money off the tick prevention device promoted on the ALDF website:

"Montvale-based Bayer Environmental Science launched Maxforce under a CDC license last year and now sells it in 18 states and Washington, D.C. Prices run from a few hundred dollars to $1,000 per year, depending on property size and amount of brush. The 4-Poster device was licensed to the American Lyme Disease Foundation, which gets a small royalty on sales, and to manufacturer C.R. Daniels Inc. of Ellicott City, Md."

Bakken on the IDSA panel has received speaker fees from Bayer.

4. Some ALDF board members stand to profit from drugs used to treat

late stage "post-Lyme syndrome":

Jeffrey Black: Executive VP, CFO, and founder of Endo Pharmaceuticals

Holdings Inc. (joined in 1997, retired 2006), Formerly @ Delloitt,

Endo specializes in pain management drugs. This company financially

benefits from drugs that address chronic Lyme symptoms, such as

migraines, tendonitis, low back pain, and chronic neurological pain.

John Geron: Managing Director, Navigant Consulting, New York, NY.

Specializes in helping pharmaceutical companies with litigation,

gov’t investigations, and strategies for marketing drugs to

physicians. Having control of the ALDF website has the potential to

be attractive to clients who sell Lyme-related drugs, vaccines, and

test kits. He wrote: “Putting Pharma Marketing ROI Strategies to

Work” Studies how to manipulate physicians to motivate them to

prescribe pharmaceutical companies drugs.
