Action Research Plan
Module 5
Action Research Plan: Intertwining Physical Education with Technology
The purpose of the Action Research Plan
The purpose of this action research is to explore how the integration of technology, such as fitness tracking apps and video analysis tools, can enhance learner engagement and performance in Physical Education (PE). The aim is to address the challenge of learner motivation and limited personalized feedback in traditional PE settings by implementing technology-driven interventions.
Research Questions
Quantitative Research Question - How does the use of wearable fitness trackers impact learners’ physical activity levels and performance in PE classes?
Qualitative Research Question - How do learners perceive the use of technology in PE, and what are their experiences with fitness tracking and video feedback?
Sampling
Participants - 94 high school students (grade 9) enrolled in my PE classes.
Sampling Method - Stratified random sampling to ensure representation across different skill levels and fitness backgrounds. Stratified sampling is when researchers split subjects up into small groups that are called strata based upon characteristics that they share.
Intervention
A technology-based PE intervention will be introduced, including:
Wearable Fitness Trackers (ex, Fitbit, Apple Watch, or pedometers)
Learners will use these devices to monitor their heart rate, steps, and activity duration during PE classes.
Video Analysis Apps (ex, Hudl)
Learners will record their movements to analyze form and technique, receiving feedback from teachers and peers, something that admin really loves, student feedback.
Gamified Physical Activity Apps (ex, Nike Training Club, MyFitnessPal)
Learners will track progress and set personal fitness goals.
Time Frame for Implementation
Week 1-2 - Baseline data collection/Pre-Assessments (physical activity levels, learners engagement surveys)
Week 3-8 - Implementation of the intervention (learners use fitness trackers and video analysis tools during PE classes)
Week 9-10 - Post-intervention data collection and analysis/Post-Assessments
Materials and Resources
- Wearable fitness trackers for learners
- Video recording devices (smartphones, tablets)
- Video analysis software/apps
- Access to a PE app or platform for tracking student progress
- PD sessions for students and PE teachers on technology usage
Assessment of Outcomes
Quantitative Assessment (Dependent Variables)
- Changes in learners’ average daily step count and heart rate during PE sessions
- Improvement in learner performance (measured through fitness tests like the Pacer Test, endurance levels)
- Participation rates in PE activities
Qualitative Assessment (Relevant Factors)
- Learner engagement and motivation levels (assessed through interviews and surveys)
- Perceived benefits and challenges of using technology in PE
- Teacher observations on learner interaction and openness to feedback
This action research plan will provide insights into how technology can modernize PE instruction, making it more interactive, data-driven, and learner-centered. I will die on the hill that all of this is possible and wouldn’t take long to implement if your school/district is Future Ready.
