40-Minute ICF Coaching Session Transcript

Coach: Welcome. It's good to see you. What would make today's coaching conversation most valuable for you?

Client: I've been offered a promotion at work, and I can't decide whether to accept it.

Coach: What is it about this decision that feels most important to explore today?

Client: I think I'm afraid of making the wrong decision.

Coach: How will you know that this conversation has been worthwhile by the time we finish?

Client: If I leave feeling clear about what I really want instead of what everyone else thinks I should do.

Coach: So your intention is to gain clarity about what you genuinely want. Is that right?

Client: Yes.

Coach: Is there anything else that would make today successful for you?

Client: No, that's exactly it.

Coach: Where would you like to begin?

Client: My manager believes I'm ready for the promotion, but I'm not convinced.

Coach: Tell me more about that.

Client: It feels like everyone believes in me except me.

Coach: What are you noticing as you say that?

Client: I hear how strange it sounds.

Coach: What feels strange about it?

Client: That I've spent years proving myself, but I still don't believe I'm capable.

(Pause)

Coach: What are you becoming aware of in this silence?

Client: I've never actually questioned that belief before.

Coach: What belief are you noticing?

Client: That eventually people will realise I'm not as good as they think.

Coach: What tells you that belief is true?

Client: I don't really have evidence.

Coach: What evidence do you have that suggests something different?

Client: I've consistently delivered results.

Coach: What else?

Client: I've led successful projects.

Coach: What else?

Client: I've mentored people who are now managers themselves.

Coach: As you hear yourself say those things, what are you noticing?

Client: That maybe I'm ignoring my achievements.

Coach: What do you think keeps that happening?

Client: Fear.

Coach: Fear of what?

Client: Being exposed.

Coach: What would being exposed mean to you?

Client: That people discover I'm not good enough.

Coach: What does "good enough" mean for you?

Client: Someone who always has the answers.

Coach: Where did you learn that?

Client: Probably from my father.

Coach: Tell me about that.

Client: He expected perfection.

Coach: How does that expectation show up in your work today?

Client: I avoid taking risks unless I'm certain I can succeed.

Coach: What impact has that had on your career?

Client: I've probably missed opportunities.

(Pause)

Coach: What are you noticing right now?

Client: I'm feeling emotional.

Coach: What's happening for you?

Client: I'm realising this isn't really about the promotion.

Coach: What is it about?

Client: It's about never believing I'm enough.

(Long pause)

Coach: Take your time.

Client: Thank you.

Coach: What feels most important now?

Client: Understanding why I keep holding myself back.

Coach: What do you already know about that?

Client: I don't trust myself.

Coach: How long has that been true?

Client: Since I was young.

Coach: When have you trusted yourself?

Client: Actually... quite a few times.

Coach: Tell me about one of those occasions.

Client: Starting my own department.

Coach: What strengths did you draw upon then?

Client: Courage. Persistence. Curiosity.

Coach: Where are those strengths today?

Client: They're still here.

Coach: What makes you say that?

Client: Because I've continued using them.

Coach: What seems to be changing in your thinking?

Client: I'm beginning to separate facts from fear.

Coach: Tell me more.

Client: The facts suggest I'm capable.

Coach: What story has fear been telling you?

Client: That capability isn't enough.

Coach: And what story do the facts tell?

Client: That I've earned this opportunity.

Coach: If fear wasn't making this decision, who would be?

Client: The confident version of me.

Coach: Describe that version.

Client: Calm. Decisive. Curious.

Coach: What advice would that version give you?

Client: Stop waiting until you feel ready.

Coach: How does hearing those words affect you?

Client: It feels freeing.

Coach: What values are most important in this decision?

Client: Growth.

Coach: What else?

Client: Integrity.

Coach: What else?

Client: Making a difference.

Coach: How does accepting the promotion align with those values?

Client: Very strongly.

Coach: How does declining it align with them?

Client: It doesn't.

Coach: What options do you see available now?

Client: Accept it.

Wait.

Negotiate support.

Decline.

Coach: Which option feels most aligned with who you are becoming?

Client: Accepting it while asking for mentoring.

Coach: What makes that option stand out?

Client: It acknowledges I don't need to know everything.

Coach: What assumptions have shifted during today's conversation?

Client: That leaders must be perfect.

Coach: What do you believe instead?

Client: Leaders keep learning.

Coach: How significant is that insight for you?

Client: Huge.

Coach: Imagine you've already accepted the promotion. What do you notice?

Client: Relief.

Excitement.

Energy.

Coach: What surprises you about that?

Client: I expected anxiety, but I'm mostly excited.

Coach: What have you learned about yourself today?

Client: I've been believing a story that isn't supported by evidence.

Coach: What else have you learned?

Client: My strengths are much more visible than I allow myself to see.

Coach: What else?

Client: That fear doesn't have to make my decisions.

Coach: What will you do next?

Client: I'll accept the promotion.

Coach: When will you do that?

Client: Tomorrow morning.

Coach: How will you prepare yourself before that conversation?

Client: I'll write down the evidence we've discussed today and read it before I speak to my manager.

Coach: How committed do you feel to taking that action?

Client: Ten out of ten.

Coach: What gives you that level of confidence?

Client: Because the decision now feels like mine.

Coach: As we come to the end of our session, what has been your biggest takeaway?

Client: That confidence comes from trusting myself rather than eliminating fear.

Coach: What are you taking away about yourself?

Client: That I'm more capable than I've allowed myself to believe.

Coach: How would you like to acknowledge yourself before we finish?

Client: For being honest.

For staying with the difficult emotions.

For choosing growth.

Coach: Is there anything else that feels complete before we close?

Client: No.

I feel ready.

Coach: Thank you for your openness today. I appreciate the work you've done.
