Matthew 16:13-16
Jesus Asks His Disciples About Who He is
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
John 4:21-26
Jesus Declares to a Samaritan Woman He is the Messiah
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
People in Jesus' time were waiting for a Messiah...But no one knew what the Messiah would be like...
There was and maybe is still much mystery surrounding Jesus...He asks His students, His disciples about His identity...Yet, He tells a Samaritan woman that He just met, that He is the Messiah...I am sure the Samaritan woman would tell most, if not all of the people she knew that Jesus was the Messiah...So word would spread in Samaria of One saying He was the Messiah...The Samaritan woman was one of the first to realize what the Messiah was like...
The Messiah had a host of expectations, and only Jesus and His Father can give us the answer why He told the Samaritan at the well, but wanted His disciples to figure out own their own who He was...But there is much mystery surrounding Jesus and His uniqueness...But God does everything for a reason, and one day we will know the answer to things like this...
