John 4:21-26
Jesus tells the Samaritan Woman, He is the Messiah
21Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
25The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
26Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman...The Jewish and Samaritans were not the best of friends...But Jesus loves everybody...Women, Samaritans, all are treated equally by Jesus...
Assyrians defeated the Israeli's of this region in 722 b.c...The Assyrians brought in Gentiles, who intermarried with Gentiles brought in by the Assyrians...These were the Samaritans...The Samaritans worshipped on Mount Gerizim, near Shechem where Jacob had visited and had bought for 100 pieces of silver (Genesis 33:19)...
The Jewish people worshipped in the temple...Jesus tells the Samaritan that a time will come when you will not be worshipping on a mountain or a temple...Because of Him (Jesus) and because God is a Spirit and the Truth, you (we) will be able to worship anywhere...
God is Spirit and Truth...
Jesus after telling her about God, tells the Samaritan woman, He is the Messiah...Because of the culture of this time, this is a powerful statement...Talking to a Samaritan woman and adding that He is the awaited Messiah sends a message to all His followers He has no favorites...God loves everyone...
