The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is for DREAMERS, those students who are not U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents, but would like to pursue higher education/training.
Non-citizens and non-permanent residents are still eligible for state and institutional financial aid, so we HIGHLY ENCOURAGE you to apply. If you are not sure if you should fill out the FAFSA or CADAA, start with the Dream Act Application and it will direct you to the correct application.
AB 540 exempts some students from paying non-resident tuition and allows them to apply for different types of California Dream Act financial aid which includes Cal Grant, Middle Class Scholarship, BOG (community college fee waiver), and others.
An eligible AB 540 student is a student who:
Attended a CA high school for 3+ years
Graduated from a CA high school or the equivalent
Enrolls in an accredited CA college or university
If applicable, complete(d) an affidavit to legalize immigration status as soon as the student is eligible.
Eligible students complete a Dream Act application instead of the FAFSA
AB 1899 allows U and T visa holders to also apply for state financial aid. (T visa holders should file a FAFSA and U visa holders should complete the CA Dream Act Application).
If a student is unsure if they should complete the Dream Act application or FAFSA, students should start with the Dream Act application and will be directed to the FAFSA, if that is the appropriate application.
Apply for CADAA between October 1 - March 2
The CA Dream Act Application opens on October 1st every year and you should plan to submit by March 2nd to be eligible for the maximum amount of aid. The sooner, the better!
To be eligible for aid during your first year of college, you should fill out the application for the year you plan to attend (next school year).
For example, students in the graduating class of 2021 should fill out the 2021-2022 application.
