Those who pass the test receive a GED credential called the California High School Equivalency Certificate. The GED test allows people to get the necessary credentials to advance in the working world or further their education. GED certification is accepted across the entire United States, and can be taken throughout the year. The GED is accepted by over 97% of colleges and employers.
In California, persons who are 18 years of age or older may take the GED test. Some 17-year-olds who meet specific criteria for testing may also take the test.
The GED test has 4 subjects:
Reasoning through Language Arts - Ability to read closely, write clearly, and edit and understand written text
Mathematical Reasoning - Quantitative & algebraic problem solving
Science - Life science, physical science, earth and space science
Social Studies - Civics and government, U.S. history, economics, geography and the world
The GED test is made up of the following types of questions:

Hot spot (select an area)
Fill in the blank
Short answer
Extended response
Each test is a different length but in total lasts about seven hours.
Math - 115 minutes
Science - 90 minutes
Social Studies - 70 minutes
Reasoning Through Language Arts - 150 minutes
