Originally Whitby Township, it was named after Whitby in Yorkshire, England so called because the original surveyor was from that part of Britain. The town owes its early success to its natural harbour on Lake Ontario. In the 1840s, a road was built north to Lake Simcoe to enable grain to be brought to the harbour for shipping.
