In the 17th century, the French set up a supply depot here.  A fortified post was later added known as La Galette in the 1670s.  Although this may have been closer to Johnstown than where the town of Prescott now stands.  

Loyalists were led to this area by Colonel Edward Jessup after the American Revolution.  It has always been a focal point of transportation, on the river, by rail and by road

Prescott, with its old buildings still retains much of its 19th century feel.  It is worth wandering through the town.  It will not take much time and it has a lovely waterfront.
