Napanee is built at the mouth of the Napanee River. The name is a corruption of the original name - Appanea. The town developed because of the waterfall in that river. It was originally called Clarksville after Robert Clark who built the first milll here.
The town centre of Napanee is about 30 minutes north of our route. We will focus on the history along the shoreline. But you can turn away at this point to visit the city which has several historic plaques.
