The origin of the name Gananoque is a subject of debate and uncertainty.  It undoubtedly derives from aboriginal languages but which, or even how many, is disputed.  It is also not clear whether the town takes the name from the river which empties into the St. Lawrence here or vice versa.

The town was established in 1789 in similar fashion to others we see on this journey.  It has become a common tourist spot for those visiting the Thousand Islands, of which there are 1,864.
