LaRue Mills Cemetery

LaRue Mills Cemetery, Leeds and theThousand Islands - Parkway just west of Pooles Resort and Old River Rd. Which is just past LaRue Mills Rd. On the north.  The plaque behind the fence is not a typical blue plaque.

Commemoration

Buried in this family cemetery is the founder of La Rue Mills, William (Billa) La Rue, his wife Abigail and six of their nine children.  La Rue was a United Empire Loyalist settler born in Albany, New York, in 1760.  He came to this area in 1790 and established a saw mill and grist mill on the creek which joins the St. Lawrence River at this point.

Background

The plaque indicates that it was placed there by his daughter Sarah La Rue.  It lists the names of those buried in the cemetery.

This cemetery is all that remains of a Loyalist community.  While historic plaques and modern towns show the successes of some early settlements, many others failed and simply ceased to exist with no marker of their origin or passing.
