Trenton sits at the mouth of the Trent River where it empties into Lake Ontario.  The Mississauga called the river Sangichiwigewonk but the English changed it to Trent after the river in England.  Europeans first settled here around 1780.  The town grew on its lumber industry.

During the First World War a major munitions plant was built in Trenton.  Just before the end of the war, an explosion destroyed the plant.

A nearby RCAF base is a major factor in the current town.  A side trip to its aircraft museum is well worth the visit.
