Oshawa was a meeting point for the fur trade before the arrival of United Empire Loyalists in the area. As well as the usual immigration seen elsewhere along this route, Oshawa attracted a surprising number of Cornish immigrants. By the mid-1840s the population had grown to around a thousand people.
