6.4 Safe Sharing

Reflecting back to our discussion COPPA and FERPA, we now visit the issue of Safe Sharing. For our younger students, we need to be extra careful of the potential hazards of YouTube surfing!

Fortunately, when we share a video with younger students, we can use a safe sharing tool or mode to block out either inappropriate videos from popping up or ads from appearing. Below are several tools that I am aware of. If you know of others, please post them to our Google+ Community.

Take a few minutes to check out the following Safe Sharing tools:

Safe Share TV is a free online service that removes unwanted ads or distractions so that the videos can be viewed safely. It works for both YouTube and Vimeo. Click on the SafeShare TV logo to the right to learn more.

QuietTube is another free online tool that you can use. Here is how to use it:

  1. Go to Quietube. It's a one page site.
  2. Drag the little box with the word "QuietTube" inside of it into your browser bookmark bar
  3. Now, you will see in the bookmark bar Quietube
  4. Navigate to the YouTube video you want to watch. When it loads, click the Quietube bookmark in the bar!

Know of any others? Share them here: our Google+ Community.

Once you have tried out either or both safe sharing tools, move onto Mod 7.0.
