4.1 Video's Purpose

Last week we learned about the power of podcasts, but let's be honest--video is still king!

In module 4 you will create a video lecture and in module 5 you will create an edited video.

Let's talk about the difference between an edited video and a screencast/lecture/tutorial video. Crystal, a BOLS student, provided good examples embedded below. The lecture (the video on the left) uses great images with purposeful animation. However, those are all things that you could easily do in a lecture. An edited video shows things in a way that couldn't be done in class. In this example (the video the right) she takes students on a field trip to see different columns. She also used music, titles, and voice overs.

Video lectures are similar to classroom lectures with the added benefit of reusability. Students could never ask a teacher to repeat a video just for them or to pause while they take a break but a video lecture can do both of those things. Students can also watch video lectures any time or any place.

Edited videos allow students to have a learning experience that wouldn't be possible in a lecture.

Move onto Mod 4.2 when you're ready!
