Can you share with us what diversity and inclusion mean to you? Why do you think they are essential?
A: For me, diversity and inclusion is what makes us different from one another in terms of culture, customs, traits, etc. and how we manage to be part of the various groups that make up our society. These concepts are essential because everyone deserves the opportunity to be part of something, no matter where they come from. Interacting with other human beings, beside being interesting for getting to know others, is also essential for many processes to take place.
What is the hardest part of working in a diverse environment?
A: Perhaps the way to approach people who don’t share the same customs. When working with a group that shares certain manners and expressions, it’s usually a bit easier to proceed; however, when you’re working in a diverse environment, you first need to learn the ways of the people you’re trying to communicate with so that communication is more effective.
How would you describe your own "diversity mix", the cultural mix within yourself?
A: Well, I come from a family that is a great mix of different cultures. I have Chinese ancestry on my maternal grandmother’s side and Colón ancestry on my paternal grandfather’s side, while my mother is from Panama City and my father is from the countryside, specifically Los Santos, so I would describe myself as someone with a rich cultural background and a great appreciation for other cultures, since even in terms of my interests, I consume content from various parts of the world.
How do you approach understanding the perspective of a coworker whose background differs from yours?
A: First of all, I don’t take the situation personally. I am willing to learn and understand the context so I know how to proceed specifically with this group of people. Curiosity rooted in respect allows for a better understanding of things like this.
How would you manage an incident where a coworker said sexist, racist, or prejudiced statements?
A: Given that I’ve experienced this situation before, I would politely tell the person that their comments can be offensive, either to me or to others present, and that in a professional setting, it’s best to keep such opinions to themselves. If things escalated, it would definitely be something to report to the leaders or Human Resources, since that kind of behavior is unacceptable anywhere, especially in the workplace, where a professional profile must be maintained.
How do you plan to enhance your understanding and knowledge of DEI?
A: Reading and immersing myself in everything necessary related to the topic. Whenever I come across something related to DEI (on social media, for example), I may pay attention, and even if I have the opportunity to receive feedback in the workplace or academic settings, I may take it as an opportunity to improve my understanding.
CONCLUSION
Inclusion and diversity are essential because they fuel a richer and more equitable world. By embracing varied perspectives and backgrounds, we unlock a collective potential that drives better outcomes in both the workplace and our personal lives. This leads to more creative problem-solving, stronger communities, and a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
