AS AN IB STUDENT......
DP is a relatively unique educational system, but as a graduating learner, I can say for sure that DP is not only about academic growth, it is about the training and development of an individual who is learning in all aspects. While students are busy with schoolwork, creativity, activity, and service fill our lives at the same time. The skills of cooperation, concentration, consistency, etc. are gradually developed through the completion of a series of self-planned, self-executed tasks.
During my two-year DP year, completing the requirements of the CAS program was not only a task but also relaxation from the rigors of academic life. During the two years, I planned musicals, participated in radio productions, helped with the Taipei City Marathon, and completed multiple sports, all of which reminded me that there is so much I can do in addition to my studies and that CAS experiences, as my teachers say, fill our entire lives.
Simply put, CAS activities act as a guiding light for IB values, allowing students to develop as unique individuals, cognizant of the role they play in interpersonal interactions. The various activities allow us to explore our personal interests and reflect our passions, personalities, and perspectives.
Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Activity is definitely the most challenging task among these experiences. To a great extent that I have noticed that exercising is my weakness yet I’m enjoying the indoor workouts. I have tried both kinds of activities throughout the CAS experiences proposal, it was clear that I have no talent in either aerobic or anaerobic exercises. Thus, I have planned several CAS activities on outdoor exercise to challenge and improve my skills from it. Surprisingly, cycling is one of my best performance exercises compared to hiking and jogging. Overall, throughout the activity I see myself identifying the strengths and how to evaluate areas to improve and grow from them.
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
To a certain extent that I have demonstrated that challenges have been undertaken and developed new skills in the process from my CAS experiences. One of the experiences was that I have invited to a podcast recording as a guest speaker to talk about my experiences as a high school student in Taiwan. Expressing is always one of my strengths, yet being involved in a public speaking program was never a familiar thing to me as I don’t have this kind of experience. Fortunately, I think it is a splendid opportunity, and I really enjoyed it. It was a stressful task, yet I think I handled it well and I have developed a greater level of confidence from sharing my own thoughts and discussing them with others. Therefore, I conduct to a certain extent I have developed in this learning outcome.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
To a certain extent this outcome has been achieved since the previous reflection, I have acknowledged that each of the CAS experiences provides a different kind of growth. By discussing with my supervisors, I always designed achievable plans to complete therefore there were not much of mistakes or issues while I was planning a CAS experience. I think the most challenging part is I would like to finish it with my friends, therefore, planning a CAS experience is not just an individual work but extent to group work. This is the fun part but also sometimes there will be some arguments if we couldn’t figure out a comprehensive plan for all of us.
To a great extent, I think I have achieved this outcome. Although I have always been interested in French, learning a completely unfamiliar language from scratch requires a great deal of persistence. I felt this feeling deep in the process of learning French. Not only do you have to remember what you have learned before to apply new information, but you have to keep learning and revisiting what you have learned before so that you can remember every single word and grammar. Especially after a long day of studying, I think it is not easy to pick up the enthusiasm for learning French and take it seriously. The streak shown on this application is a record of one lesson completed each day. I have deeply experienced this learning outcome in the process of self-learning.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
To a great extent, I have achieved this learning outcome; for me, group work is different from individual work in that I have less control over the direction of the project, but the process is much more fun. But the process adds a lot of fun to getting along with others. More than anything else, I was able to discuss and exchange different opinions with different people to increase the creativity and level of the project. By working with others, you can learn the strengths and weaknesses found in others and reflect on your role and responsibilities in the group. The most valuable thing about group work is that we are not only responsible for ourselves, but also for the whole group, which I think is the fastest way to develop a sense of responsibility. I think this is the quickest way to develop a sense of responsibility. Again, communication and getting along with others are also very important. Sometimes the finished product does not meet the individual's wishes, and communication and coordination after adjustment is a necessary process.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
To a little extent, I have achieved this learning outcome. The only thing that was more relevant was the staff of the Taipei Marathon. It was an international sporting event, and the fact that it was held during the epidemic symbolized how well Taiwan was managing the epidemic, so we were able to hold an event for many people during such a difficult time. As a staff, we had to participate in the pre-trip briefing and communicate with the participants and organizers to help them make the event perfect. As a result, we learned more about the global epidemic and the current situation in Taiwan. The concept of health in Taiwan, because of the social development, I think that's why we were able to have a good performance in the face of the seriousness of the epidemic.
7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Participating in the EDB's radio shoot and publicly expressing my opinions has made me feel to a great extent that I have considered the ethics of choices and actions, and because I am publicly sharing my thoughts on the educational system, the audience is naturally influenced by my ideology, both positively and negatively. I realize that what I say has an impact on society, and that even if it has an impact on one person, his or her actions can change many things. Especially in the case of education and messaging, it is important to consider how one's words affect these audiences.
Conclusion
My advice to the upcoming CAS students is to do what you’re interested in and do it properly. Five years later, I will probably remember music Seussical one, it's remarkable.
