Introduction:
CAS is a project which every student has to accomplish during the last two years of IBDP, the project is separated into three parts, creativity, activity, and service, students have to complete 50 hours for each part which is a total 150 hrs. For me, CAS is a very meaningful project, we often forget to relax when trapped by schoolwork. CAS can let us stop for a while and do some stuff that both helps others and ourselves. I felt like I really expanded my knowledge both in and out of the class room. This great experience also helped me to grow a great deal and I had a more open and mature outlook on different areas.
Through my experience with CAS, I learned how to work as a member of a team and understand team work. I also was able to try other activities and helped me become a more compete person. At first I thought it was really difficult as I found no time to complete each task, but as I became more involved with CAS, I realized that the time was very well spent. It was worth the effort and sacrifices that I made. In addition to learning more about my classmates, I also connected with people in the community outside of school, so I could be a more people person. I think this will help me a great deal when I go to college next year as it will teach me how to communicate with the real world outside of school.
I always like to play with kids and even wanted to be a teacher in the future when I was young. While I was teaching the kids, I found myself being able to be patient and communicate well with the youngsters, and I can always find new ways to make them learn better. During the process of teaching the kids, I was not so sure about the teaching method and I didn't notice their feelings in class, but I soon found out about the new method and try to communicate with the kids. I decided to first become their friend or sister instead of a teacher. This can soon shorten our distance and make them enjoy the class and learn more.
Before I joined the basketball team, I thought basketball was not a difficult sport. I believed that the people would treat me nicely and the competition would not be so fierce. I was soon proved wrong. The players on all the teams were all very serious and competitive when playing ball. I soon realized that my physical conditioning was not up to the standard of playing basketball. Therefore, I have to train my body harder to be able to run up and down the court with my teammates. Also, I had to develop tactics and learn the strategy for playing basketball as I was a novice and did not know any great plays to be successful on the court.
In this CAS project, I learned how to ice-skate and at last, taught others how to skate. At first, I wanted to challenge myself, so I went ice skating with my friend when I don't even know how to skate. My friend taught me how to skate. It was really hard to balance on ice and start skating without the help of others. After knowing how to skate, one of my friends told me that he wanted to learn ice skating too. I became his teacher at that time. Teaching others was totally different from just knowing how to skate, because you have to either keep your own balance and also their balance. In this activity, I have learned the importance of two things, knowing your strengths and cooperating with others. By cooperating with others, you can discover your weakness and help others.
Trash has caused a very serious problem by causing pollution in many parts of our ecosystem, from beaches to even the atmosphere. In this activity, I decided to clean the mountain by picking up the trash along the path. I was shocked when I found so much trash. During the whole day, I picked up two large bags of trash, which is a lot, considering that I only worked for a few hours. After picking up the trash, I realized that it is very important not to litter. We must keep our environment clean for our future.
Pulling the plants was a very bad action, it killed the plants. Because I really had fun sticking the plants on my friends' backs, I killed a lot of plants, which I felt really sorry when reflecting at the end of the day. It was unethical for me to kill plant just for fun, so I deeply regretted my choice and action that day.
Conclusion:
Before I enrolled in Kuei Shan to study the IB program, I was someone who didn't like to go outdoors and preferred to study on by my own, but because of CAS, I learned how to cooperate and communicate with others to finish our activities. I also had to think of others' needs in order to complete the activity successfully. By cooperating with others I was able to complete these tasks and activities. Most importantly, I was able to gain valuable knowledge and make some lasting friendships. These are all experiences that I will take and treasure to the next part of my life.
