Introduction
Throughout the two years of DP CAS experiences, I think CAS has encouraged me to expose myself to more non-academic related activities. Overall, I feel like the CAS program has helped me built upon my "balanced" character from the IB learner profile, as it has assisted me in engaging in other activities apart from all our DP required assignments.
1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
I fufilled this learning outcome to a great extent as through my CAS journey, I have devoted myself to many individual activities, this would mean my growth as I acquire new knowledge or learn new things. Some of the events include self learning a language and learning how to play the guitar.
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
I fulfilled this learning outcome to a moderate extent since I believe that there wasn't too many challenges undertaked by me. I think that I could have engaged in more challenging activities that pushes me out of my comfort zone. However, there were definetely some challenges in my CAS experiences, one example would be hiking. This was a pretty tough challenge for me as I entered DP, I rarely had any oportunities to engage in these physical activities, hence, that was a challenge to me as we had to climb the yang min mountain several times, which took me a lot of strength to overcome this challenge.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
I fulfilled this learning outcome to a certain extent. Since there were many experience where I had to keep track of the particular experience and to manage how I will be approaching the particular activity/service/throughout the course of the experience. A few examples would be the peer tutoring and self-learning a language. These experiences required planning and managing the time. Also, the camping trip experience requires me to organize many files and paperwork. However, I do believe that I could've been more organized in terms of organize the materials that I've tought or learned in a more coherant manner.
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience
I fulfilled this learning outcome to a great extent. The two main ideas of this learning outcome is "commitment" and "perseverance", therefore, I believe that some of the CAS experiences I engaged in were experiences that required long term commitment and perseverance. These experiences includes jogging and the Beyond Horizon Volunteer (which was a program where we taught children English ), both of these experiences were experiences that I have participated in for at least 6 times. For the Beyond Horizon Volunteer program, we had to teach the children English via Skype, hence, we had to teach them on each fridays, which requires me to make sure that I prepare the materials beforehand, such as presentation slides. For my jogging activity, I set goals during that period of time so that I am able to gradually improve. I also demonstrated this learning outcome by my persistence and from time to time, I would feel drowsy and lazy to wake up 5:30 every morning, however, I tried to always overcome that.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
To a great extent, I have fufilled and demonstrated this learning outcome. Throughout my CAS journey, there were multiple activities where I had to work with others, collaboratively towards a same goal. One of such is the seussical CAS crew project both during the preparation of the materials and props and also the day of the G8 seussical performance. For the project, our group was responsible for the props, thus, this required us to work together as a group and each being responsible for one part.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
I demonstrated this learning outcome to a limited extent. I think this is the strand that I lacked the most since I rarely engaged in activities that involves a global significance. When I was planning my CAS activities, I found many services such as volunteering at nursing homes, however, due to COVID and the time of the day they offered for volunteering, I was unable to participate in those activities. Nevertheless, the Beyong Horizon Volunteering did reflect on the education and resources in rural areas, such issue is reflected through for example the language barrier and also their lifestyles based on what my student has attempt to describe to me. I also volunteered for the Taipei Marathon event that took place around Taipei 101. This somewhat relates to a global significance as there were participants from all over the world to which demonstrates events that involve people from different regions of the globe to come together.
Personally, I think that I somewhat demonstrated this learning outcome. This is also a learning outcome that I should reflect on more throughout my CAS experiences, particularly how my actions and what I am doing would affect others and its ethical considerations. Again, I feel like the Beyond Horizon Volunteering activity as there were many times where I struggled to communicate with her and that she would barely remember anything I taught her that day, therefore, I had to reflect on my approach how I could address certain topics to her without making her feel uncomfortable. I was able to contemplate this issue and improve the learning experience by stopping from time to time to make sure she was on track and that she understands the content.
Conclusion
Overall, I regret not completing the proposals and reflections right after I complete the activities as it could be pretty overwhelming when you leave most of the reflections and proposal forms. Another advice would be to carefully select and plan the activities that you will engage in so that these activities are able to fufill the seven learning outcome.
I think in five years from now, I would definitely rememeber the experiences like the Taipei marathon event and the Beyond Horizon Volunteer event. Other activities like the new things that I've acquired throughout my CAS journey would definitely be continuously practiced and further built upon.
