Final CAS Reflection
The CAS experiences are all based on my performances and actions in the past 2 years of DP. There are various memorable experiences and are mostly self motivated. CAS is important because it shows personal development throughout student's DP year. I personally believe that "A" is the hardest criterion to achieve because of how hard it is to keep a balanced life in between the academics and actions. However, many of the CAS experience were enjoyable especially being a part of the Student Council. This final CAS reflection aims to reflect on what I did well and what could be improved.
1. Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth
Being a part of the Student Council has allowed me to achieve in this aspect. To a large extent, this was one of the most successful outcome that I have achieved throughout the 2 years. The Student Council is in charge of various school activity and events. My position is the Vice President in Student Council, so I am responsible for supporting the President and guide other co-members. Within the one year we worked together. There I was able to use and develop my ability to help my co-members work collaboratively towards our central goal: improving the quality of life for students by creating a school life that is more balanced between academics and personal interests. I have found working on the student council to be a unique opportunity to engage with my classmates and learn the fundamentals of teamwork, and I have found it to be extremely meaningful work.
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
To a large extent, I believe that I have achieved this outcome during the time serving as the Vice President of the Student Council. Since that the Student Council is responsible for hosting various school events, we have to compose proposals in order to start an event. We had to follow school policy and overcome the pandemic during our session as the Student Council. Hence, it was much more challenging for us to host an event. The most memorable experience is hosting the election online. Due to the serious pandemic, we had to vote online and stream the progress of revealing votes. At last, we figured it out by streaming through YouTube and collect votes by Google Forms. I believe this unique experience has proved my ability to undertake challenges and the ability to develop new skills. However, I think that I can improve by putting more effort into the planning phase to solve our challenges faster.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
This is one of the outcomes that I believe I have fully achieved. Serving in the Student Council required heavy loads of planning and discussion. All events, proposals, and schedules were initiated by the Student Council team. For example, formulating an entire plan of safety for our Master Chef event, composing new regulations for online election, and also planning schedules for volleyball tournament games. These are all experiences that helped us in the area of initiating and plan a CAS experience. Therefore, I believe I have largely achieved this learning outcome.
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
I have achieved this learning outcome to a certain extent. Serving in the Student Council requires a certain extent of passion, commitment and perseverance in order to complete different tasks. Master Chef and the volleyball tournament were two events that the Student Council focused on the most. Hosting these events requires a lot of effort, from planning, discussing, formulating, reviewing, adjusting, and finally hosting. Being in the Student Council really showed my commitment to these events and perseverance to servicing. I believe that I can still show more commitment and perseverance by pointing out more ideas when the team is discussing, but I have improved throughout the year in Student Council. Another aspect is my commitment into basketball. Basketball is my personal interest, which I decided to join the TISSA basketball team in order to improve my basketball skills. I have almost attended all practices and gave out my best on court. Hence, I think that I have shown my commitment and perseverance towards my interest.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Serving in the Student Council and playing as the Shooting Guard in the TISSA basketball team both taught me well on working collaboratively. Of all my CAS experiences, these two are the major elements that I learned how working collaboratively is critical. In collaboration, it’s important to help people to feel heard and understood. In this kind of environment, collaborators are more likely to share the thoughts and concerns that help make sure potential problems and necessary solutions are all taken in to account, as well as to work together happily. Working collaboratively with a group of co-members in student council will teach you quickly how important it is to be humble. Instead of one person giving orders or commands to others, we’ve learned to organize our team to coordinate work division as a group so that we can activate everyone’s talents and assign them tasks based on their strengths and interests. Group chemistry is a deciding factor in a team’s success.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
I believe this is one of the most difficult learning outcomes to achieve among all 7 outcomes. In the Student Council election, we aim to inspire groups of juniors who are interested in global issues and those who have potential to host these events to be candidates for Student Council. All of our hosted events are all globally connected, from Master chef promoting awareness of food waste to Volleyball tournament emphasizing the importance of balanced life, the Student Council aims to engage with global issues.
7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
This is also one of the hardest learning outcomes to achieve. In our proposal for Master Chef, we have mentioned that participants should always just request for the exact amount of ingredients they need, because wasting food is inappropriate. Through our actions on promoting awareness in the competition, participants have understood the importance of not wasting food and respect our source of food.
Conclusion
For future CAS students, CAS might not be seen as important as major subjects. However, CAS is something we will always encounter in life. The learning outcomes basically sums up all kinds of learning materials we will face in our life, and it is important that we reflect on it so we can fulfill the IB learner profile. I would advise them that do not keep CAS to your last minute or else it will be hard for you to manage. Good luck and do your best!
