The moment has finally arrived. Completing all those service learning, artistic activities, and sports after two years. Looking back, I realized how much fun I had, how much I learned, and how, in addition to creating wonderful memories for which I am grateful, the experiences I gained have prepared me for my future life in several ways. For me, CAS events are chances for us to learn via experience, and I can improve my personal and interpersonal development during selected activities. It fosters a sense of success and happiness from the job by allowing for self-determination and engagement with others. The ultimate purpose of completing the services is because I am a part of the community, the education taught us to positively influence people around our life to maintain a heartwarming society, and to support people with our interests and professions.
Identify my own Strengths and Develop areas for Growth
With regards to physical CAS activities that I had completed, I have identified my strength and weakness in respectively selected activities, then I continue to plan for improvements during the processes. Most of my CAS events were based on my personal interests, the most unforgettable one was when I spent time designing illustrations(mascot) for the student council. Following the standard operation process of most professional illustrators, it is harder than I thought, the process requires decent interviewing, communication, and note-taking skills. For me, the biggest challenge is having discussions with clients, the first time I had a talk with a member of the student council, I noticed that clients' identification and understanding of their brand, organization, or team vision can be unclear. For a designer to meet their demands, we should complete a set of questions for clients to provide all the information I need in order to design the exact illustration they want. The first time had conversations with them is when I encountered difficulties, then based on lacking information from the clients, I rewrote a list of questions for them to answer. The illustrations after the first one were all accepted at once. After the event, I noticed the areas that I should improve to complete a better performance based on this simulation of actual business SOP.
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
I participated in the varsity TISSA basketball competition in 11th grade due to my interest in basketball. During the basketball season, the coach had spent so much time with all the team members to practice basketball for the varsity competition. He points out the weakness of every member and arranged us in a specific position to compete with students from other schools. I remembered we played a run named "horn", this offense static includes 5 to 6 possibilities for us to get prepared while encountering different circumstances. I have taken a lot of time to practice my court vision to get used to the tactic, I have improved a lot with observation on court after the TISSA event ends.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
I am a member of the GIN service club of our school, we aim to encourage and facilitate national and international networking and collaboration in order to bring the greatest minds together and support continuous learning and improvement while reducing duplication of effort across the guideline world. While the knowledge phase of the global issue was taught to us, our club decided to complete an activity that is done by our hands to support the global world as a part of the community. As one of the leaders in the GIN club, we have decided to adopt a charity selling event to gain money for donation, planning on a food selling activity that introduces the global issue and asks for support from adults to the global organizations. Therefore, my team and I initiated an educational schedule for the club for about a year to activate our charity sales, from letting members understand the importance of global issues to discussion based on charity selling event.
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
My CAS events such as designing illustrations contain my strong perseverance of myself in the activity. There was once I designed a logo illustration for my friend as an emergence piece, and she asked me if I can complete it in a single night. Most of the logos require a week to complete, so it is hard enough for me to complete a logo in a single night including all the discussions and editions for the logo. Besides the time pressure, I am also dealing with unit tests from subjects awaiting for me to face. So I make every step as sufficient as possible to save time and start merging all the elements she asked to adopt. In this highly stressed condition, I did complete my work and it has become one of the most unforgettable experiences. That logo was for a bubble tea shop, I am grateful that I did complete it after all.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I definitely applied the skill to work collaboratively during the TISSA event, since it was a team sport, everything done in the basketball team should consider the condition of every basketball player and work to familiarize with each other. Sometimes we felt nervous on the court and we miss the best moments to pass the ball for teammates to take shots. This is what we all spent time to training for, learning collaboration and sportsmanship from varsity competitions and trainigs.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Glancing around the environment that I lived in, I personally liked the old street culture of Taiwan the most. The nearest place is Tamsui I would tell, it is a district in New Taipei City, Taiwan, located in the north where the Taiwan Strait and the Tamsui River meet. Tamsui Old Street along the river, is lined with shops, restaurants, and vendors offering local specialties. But it has become dirty since the increase in tourism, now it has lost its flourishing atmosphere as before, so we decided to clean the street ourselves to recover the old streets and take actions to raise environmental awareness.
7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and action
While teaching lower graders to complete the graphic design for their posters, I once thought of completing the whole poster for them with my graphic skills. But think of the purpose of service, I completed a poster and taught them every single element step by step until they master and memorized it all. This is what the service should complete. I felt good after explaining all the elements to them although I felt extremely tired. But helping the community is the vision of CAS activities, so it should be done in the way it is supposed to.
Reflection:
I believe I have adequately addressed all of the learning outcomes, implying that I gained a lot from the activities, which is gratifying to know. More importantly, I reflect on the things I did and remember how much fun I had doing them, which I believe is at least essential. Although I believe it is vital to try to develop in areas where you are weak and to track your progress, some activities are important to me to do just because I enjoy them. This is especially true because the last two years of school were quite challenging — numerous assignments, homework, and tests consumed a significant amount of time and energy, and as a result, seeing the results was extremely rewarding.
