Class of 2022 CAS Final Reflection and Celebration

CAS experience is the most motivational and attractive project for me to do within two years of DP life. I can freely choose the activities I want to do or decide to experience things I didn't experience before. My CAS experiences did improve my life experience. Moreover, it also broadened my perspectives. They lead me to become more responsible and manageable after these two years of the DP program.

Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I am a person who loves dancing a lot. It is my habit and also my strength. For this time, I decided to use my strength in dancing to complete the CAS project. To a large extent, in my sports day dance project, I identified my dancing strength during the practice. While preparing for sports day dance, we learned different choreography from 3 songs combined. It is hard for me to practice those songs within a short time. Also, my part of the choreography is complicated to learn. The dance step required a flexible waist to make the performance more fluent. Therefore, to improve the outcome, I practiced not only in school but also at home. Eventually, the performance was perfect, and I succeeded in completing that complicated dance step; I also learned a new skill in dancing.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

To a large extent, I received the challenge of teaching students basic English online. I have never had an opportunity to teach others. The CAS project Beyond Horizon gave me the first experience lending my knowledge to others. In this project, I learned how to communicate with my student, who is smaller than me. I realized that if I want to teach English well, I shouldn't only put as much effort as possible into making the English learning material for my student. I should not let my student learn English under pressure. On the other hand, I should recognize their feelings and emotions. Those realizations are from my experience teaching my student during the Beyond Horizon project. I accepted the challenge of being a teacher and developed the skill of teaching others.

3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

In my fitness planning, to a large extent, I have initiated and planned well the CAS experience. I was challenging myself to do a fast walk on the treadmill for half an hour daily. Also, I was planning to do the leg exercise that requires 10 mins a loop for three sets. In CAS experience, activity is a perspective for me to prepare well. The reason is that I can focus more on training myself since I planned well on the fitness activity. Also, I would have a goal to follow, which motivated me.

4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

I was a teammate of the Seussical music performance preparation team. We are preparing the background of the music performance and designing the special makeup for those performers. This project lasts for three months. During these three months, we are not only painting, drawing, and planning but also communicating, having conflict, and collaborating. I have often wanted to give up this CAS project because it made me exhausted every time after the preparation. However, I didn't give up. The end of the preparation was fantastic. The background looks suitable for a Seussical music performance. Also, the special makeup design seems to be successful for the performance.

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

In the Sports day fundraising event, my friend and I are designing a poster for 2021 sports day information with grade 12 students. While designing the poster, we came up with some very different ideas and perspectives. We tried to put all the ideas together, but it didn't work. The poster became disorganized and difficult to find the information. Therefore, we finally collaborated and communicated with the Grade 12 students, discussing which ideas were unsuitable for the poster's design.

6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This project is to go through the five hiking pathways on two mountains. To a small extent, in the project hiking, I have recognized some global issues related to climate change and littering problems. For example, when I'm hiking, I can see some bushes near the path have plenty of plastic bags and bottles because the location is difficult for people to reach, so I can not pick up the garbage. Moreover, some interaction boards have informed us that some plants are almost extinct due to global warming. During this hiking project, I can learn how the government protects those natural resources and lets people get in to hike.

7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

In the project of Lighthouse Mission trip planning, to the extent that my teammates and I did consider the ethical issues in the activity planning. Since most students experience abuse or safety problems in their families, we should consider those ethical issues and try to use activities to teach them some moral concepts, preventing them from having ethical issues in the future. We plan to attend Shanzhi elementary school to serve and learn with them. We need to prepare six activities to help them learn English and some ethics and global knowledge for those students plans to do.

My advice to the other students attending the DP program CAS experience is not only a project for you to complete. It is also an opportunity to experience new things you haven't experienced before. Time management is also required for CAS projects; students should manage well to finish them within two years of DP life. For me, the most memorable thing after completing the CAS project is the way to collaborate well with others. CAS is a project that often includes collaboration with others. I got a lot of improvement in my communication skills to prevent conflict in the collaboration. Therefore, I think the memory and experience of collaborating with other classmates are the most important after finishing the CAS project.
