Intro:
CAS stands for creativity, activity and service. Which is for the most part very FUN. However due to the countless excruciatingly painful reflections, that are mandatory to make sure you have completed CAS, CAS has become dead to all people, especially me. Through these experiences, I learnt new skills and thoroughly enjoyed myself doing activities with friends, so the key to making CAS not as bad would be to do it with friends, else you will suffer.
Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth: large extent
This outcome was achieved through most of my CAS activities. From knowing and keeping track of my own strengths, to further challenge myself in further activities, or develop areas of growth in areas that I am not confident in. One example of this would be the World Vision Hunger 12, as this is the second time I'm attending, I felt that only starving for 12 hours was not enough, as it seemed easy the last time, so I decided to challenge myself, and starve for 24 hours instead. By pushing my limits, I am now able to see that there are places where I can improve, if I decided to push myself. And, I feel that this is a very important skill, to understand your weaknesses, and make them strong, so that you become holistic, jack of all trades master of all.
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills in the process: some extent
This is mostly seen in my Activity, in CAS. As I participated in this year's TISSA badminton competition. In the beginning, we were exhausted by our training, which I found to be extremely challenging, since we started off with a very intense and long warm up, after which, we had to practice moves and stances, but pushing through made us stronger, as we became more tolerant and had more stamina, which proved very useful for our match.
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience: almost no extent
Personally, I felt that I did not do this as well, since most of my CAS experiences were spontaneous, I signed up for world vision club since I had I had already been there last semester, I signed went climbing mountains, exercising and biking with my friends, because we were bored during the summer vacation, so I didn't exactly plan for every single CAS activity. However, I say almost no extent since
Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience: to a huge extent
This outcome was one of the easier ones for my, as I have a habit of wanting to achieve as much as possible (most of the time) and when this happens, I commit myself fully and persevere to achieve my goals. For example, one of my projects, I started a social media account dedicated to art, and started posting my drawings on regular intervals, however, I had to abandon this project due to exams and college preparations. But during the period, I made sure I would dedicate a least a certain amount of time in a day to draw, and to make sure I posted every few days. I felt that this is a good habit to have, and one that I can build on, since I know that if a persevere in anything for a certain amount of time no matter how short or how long, I can become good at something.
Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: to a huge extent
This one was a easy outcome as well, since it was achieved in almost all my CAS projects. In the image below, we sang a song during sports day with a cappella, this requires a lot of collaboration with each other, as only human voices are present, meaning that simple mistakes cannot be covered by an accompanying piano or guitar. However, we practiced day and night, during lunch, during IB core, and in the end managed to finally sing the song as good as we could get it. Group collaboration was also extremely helpful during world vison club, as we often had to work on different projects as different groups, and in order to make events happen, we were assigned individual tasks as groups to finish. This was extremely effective, as we all completed our own parts and in the end had very successful events.
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: some extent
In club, we often had services that delt with issues of global significance, since world vision is dedicated to helping people in need. These services included raising awareness about on going issues such as world hunger, draughts and so on, as these issues were already explored in class, we were able to quickly come up with innovative ways to educate others and raise awareness of these issues at the same time in a fun way. for example playing games on facts about global issues while attending the hunger 12 event, which distracted us from the hunger since we were stressed and having fun at the same time.
Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions: little to no extent
this was on of the outcomes that I barely had anything do to with, since I rarely have CAS experiences about ethics of choices and actions. The only one that I think has some correlation with this learning outcome, is earning about our choices of life during club, how we can make a difference and impact others through meaningful choices, and lifestyles.
For future CAS students:
don't listen to anyone, do stuff you like with friends, and write the reflections immediately after, that way you won't suffer or fail.
