CAS has played a significant role throughout the two years of my DP programme. It influenced me on a large scale and let me realize the importance of creativity, activity and service. These three aspects have a positive influence on my personal growth, as these turned me into a more creative, active, and helpful person. Under the pandemic and academics, I managed to touch all three aspects for most of my experiences, as it saves time and brings a holistic approach to my growth. This final reflection regarding my CAS journey concludes the goals and achievements that I have been able to accomplish.
1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I believe this is a learning outcome that is touched within all of my experiences. However, the experience regarding the student council election best demonstrates how I identified my own strengths and areas that need to be improved. I decided to join the election serving in the public relations position. I teamed up with Anny, Liam, Kelly and Claire, together we make a good and strong team. The election process was definitely stressful, we had to introduce ourselves and explain our proposal to all students so that they get to know us and the changes that we want to bring. Talking in public has always been a weakness for me, I was very nervous talking live and showed to each class. This is a major area that I think I need to work on more. I comforted my teammates when they are feeling down and unconfident, caring has always been a strength for me. This is definitely an advantage and I believe that I can work and communicate well in groups. This particular activity expands the view that I have towards myself, this makes me realize the weaknesses that I need to improve and the strengths that I need to keep.
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Below is a part of an activity proposal written by our student council. Behind this organized and implementable proposal, our student council encountered many problems. Our team actually went through several fights and misunderstandings. For example, having different opinions and unbalanced work division. However, we figured these out by communicating and understanding each other. We spent a lot of time talking and planning, the challenges that we encountered as a group had been undertaken through each individual’s effort. This made us more compatible and unafraid to express our own opinions. This experience is meaningful as it developed my communication and teamwork skills. I was able to learn so much from this experience.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
The volleyball competition was an event that our student council decided to hold in our school. We noticed that the students like do to sports and have a great interest in volleyball, there are many students that will play volleyball at the PU field after school. So we decided to hold a volleyball competition among the 7-12 graders. We hope that this will motivate and evoke deeper interest in this sport by competing against friends and learn how to work together as a team. We believe that this is a positive influence that is great to spread in school. We planned the completion chart and wrote a proposal for the school to approve our event so that we can immediately start hosting this in school. Luckily our school supported our event and thought that this is a great activity for the students. Below are the rules and regulations that we established for this activity. Planning is the initial stage for this CAS experience.
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
The Master Chef is a huge event, we did a lot of preparation regarding proposals and communicating with the school. Since this is a cooking event, it requires the use of fire and electricity, the school was concerned about safety problems during the event. This event took longer for the school to approve, we originally thought that this event wasn't going to work out and get implemented. However, we didn’t give up and continued trying, we thought of different solutions and ways regarding potential problems. Finally, with a detailed description of the safety equipment and teachers that will be at the event in case any emergencies happen. This event was finally approved by the school. This event will not succeed without our commitment and perseverance, which settles as a meaningful experience.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The Seussical crew is an experience that best demonstrates the benefits of working in a group. It is a long process as there are many things to create and draw, we have to stay after school in order to catch up. I really enjoyed the process as I was able to stay with my friends and create such a good memory. Our grade worked as a huge team and divided into small teams for different things. I am glad that we are able to work together and communicate whenever we encounter problems. I was so proud of our team, we finished so many things and the show is successful. I was able to learn about knowledge from different areas and definitely the value of working with others. we helped each other when we have difficulties and troubles.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The Master Chef was a huge event that our student council decide to hold amongst the school. The purpose of this event was for students that are interested in cooking and also for college preparation. As we move on to the next stage in life, basic cooking skills are essential, we hope that students are able to learn a new life skill. Various life lessons can be carried and applied, for instance, to not waste money and food.
7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
In our proposal for the Master Chef's event, we mentioned that a limited amount of food is provided to the participants. We hope this conveys the message of to not waste food, as poverty is a global issue. Through participants' own choices and actions, ethical problems regarding food waste and trash can be considered.
Conclusion
With my CAS journey coming to an end, I would advise the upcoming CAS students to finish their CAS experiences and reflections during the first year of DP. This saves a lot of time and energy for the second year of DP, where you can concentrate and devote all time in academics. I will never forget the amount of activities and experiences that I did in the student council. These are all rewards and improvements that I am able to apply to my future life.
