Keeping learning engaged and geared toward the learners as much as possible. People learn in multiple ways, and keeping people engaged with all the technology available these days, and how our attention tends to be pulled in multiple directions. Understanding why we are learning something and how it will impact future decisions is crucial in staying engaged and recognizing the value of the information. Adult learners have previous life experiences and information to draw on, so they can learn to build upon existing knowledge or, if the information is conflicting, to determine why things changed depending on more detailed information, etc.
Some challenges that arise with teaching and using technology, which can be a beautiful tool, can also make it easier for learners to check out or phone in the information. Maintaining engagement and conducting check-ins or quizzes to assess learning can be beneficial. I'm a very visual learner, so having visual aids is essential. If education is in person, group discussions can help keep people engaged, and it's helpful to learn from your peers since they may have expertise in areas that you don't.
Keeping in mind that people need to feel comfortable to stay engaged and learn. When people are distracted by being too hot or too cold, it affects their ability to concentrate, and they may not fully engage with the intended learning. This is particularly important to consider when teaching a class with diverse populations, as it is essential to ensure that students feel comfortable and can pay attention and stay engaged with the material.
Technology is a great tool/option when it comes to teaching and learning. I've had great experiences playing Kahoot in classes, which I appreciate because it helps keep learners on task and engaged. Technology has been helpful in distance learning, and tools like Google Docs have been particularly beneficial for group papers and projects, eliminating the need for in-person meetings. Some things cannot be replicated by technology, and this was one of the reasons I chose to attend school with a Hybrid approach to learning, which combines face-to-face time with online learning. This approach helps adult learners balance their life obligations.
Further learning for myself I do enjoy going to conferences or evening attending them virtually. Group discussions also help solidify information for me. Self-paced studying and writing things out in my handwriting help me see the information in my own words.
