An Australian’s Dream - Visiting Oloron Ste Marie

Oloron Ste Marie has always been part of my life. Our home, in Melbourne Australia, was called Oloron. When I asked my father John why, he would say, “Oloron is where your Great Grandfather came from in France – near the Pyrenees. Your Great Aunt Marie visited Oloron in 1924 and found members of the family living near there. It is our connection.”My Great Grandparents, Jean Baptiste Bernadou and Elizabeth Lambert met in Bordeaux in 1870. Elizabeth, from London, England, was working there as a Governess. They were married in 1872. Jean Baptiste and Elizabeth Bernadou arrived in Australia in March 1873. Their son, Albert William, was born on 19 August 1873. Albert married Clara Isabella Jones in 1904 and they had 5 children Philip, John, Leon, Marie Isabel and Elizabeth. Their daughter, Marie Louise, was born on 16 April 1876 in Geelong. Marie Louise never married.

Marie Louise Bernadou was a very studious young girl. She enjoyed her schooling and received a Scholarship to the Presbyterian Ladies College, a highly respected girls Independent Secondary College in Melbourne, where she was Dux of the School for 2 years and received many prizes. Following secondary school she received 2 Scholarships to attend the University of Melbourne, where she studied for her Arts Degree completing her Bachelor of Arts and a Masters Degree and the Diploma of Education in 1898. Not many women attended University at that time.

She went on to teach the French language in Secondary School. She always wanted to travel to England, where her Mother was born and to France to the birth place of her father. In 1924 she visited Oloron Ste Marie and met up with members of her father’s family. She always kept us well informed about our French ancestors.

Le rêve d’une Australienne – La visite d’Oloron-Ste-Marie

Oloron-Ste-Marie a toujours fait partie de ma vie. Notre maison, à Melbourne, en Australie, s’appelait Oloron. Quand je demandais à mon père pourquoi, il disait “Oloron est le lieu, en France, d’où venait votre arrière-grand-père – près des Pyrénées. Votre grand-tante Marie a visité Oloron en 1924 et elle a retrouvé des membres de la famille qui vivaient dans les environs. Ce sont nos attaches”.

Mes arrière-grands-parents, Jean-Baptiste Bernadou et Elizabeth Lambert se sont rencontrés à Bordeaux en 1870. Elizabeth, originaire de Londres, en Angleterre, travaillait là comme gouvernante. Ils se marièrent en 1872.

Jean-Baptiste et Elizabeth Bernardou arrivèrent en Australie en mars 1873. Leur fils Albert William est né le 19 août 1873. Albert a épousé Clara Isabella Jones en 1904 et ils eurent 5 enfants : Philip, John, Leon, Marie Isabel et Elizabeth. Leur fille, Marie-Louise, est née le 16 avril 1876 à Geelong. Marie-Louise ne s’est jamais mariée.

Marie-Louise Bernadou était une jeune fille très studieuse. Elle aimait ses études et elle reçut une bourse pour le collège presbytérien de filles, une école secondaire privée pour filles de Melbourne, de grande réputation. Elle a été major de l’école pendant deux ans et a reçu de nombreux prix. Après l’école secondaire, elle a obtenu deux bourses pour entrer à l’université de Melbourne, où elle a préparé et terminé sa licence ès-lettres, une maîtrise et le certificat d’aptitude à l’enseignement en 1898. Peu de femmes fréquentaient l’université à cette époque.

Puis elle enseigna le français dans le secondaire. Elle avait toujours voulu voyager en Angleterre où était née sa mère et en France, pays natal de son père. En 1924, elle a visité Oloron-Ste-Marie et elle a rencontré des membres de sa famille paternelle. Elle nous a toujours tenus au courant de nos ancêtres français.
