103. Surah Al-Asr (The Time)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
1. وَالْعَصْرِ

2. إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ

3. إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
3. إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
Wal 'asr
Innal insaana lafee khusr
Illal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati wa tawaasaw bilhaqqi wa tawaasaw bissabr
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Verily Man is in loss,
Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.

3. إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
3. إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
1. وَالْعَصْرِ (wal-‘aṣr) - By Time
Example Sentence:
Arabic: وَالْعَصْرِ يَعْبُرُ بَطِيئًا (wal-‘aṣr ya‘buru baṭī’an)
Translation: By time, it passes slowly.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: وَالْعَصْرِ يُقَدِّمُ الدُّرُوسَ (wal-‘aṣr yuqaddimu ad-durūs)
Translation: By time, lessons are given.
2. إِنَّ (inna) - Indeed

Arabic: إِنَّ الطَّالِبَ ذَكِيٌّ (inna aṭ-ṭāliba dhakīyy)
Translation: Indeed, the student is intelligent.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: إِنَّ الْمَسْأَلَةَ صَعْبَةٌ (inna al-mas'alah ṣa‘bah)
Translation: Indeed, the issue is difficult.
3. الْإِنسَانَ (al-insān) - The Human

Arabic: الْإِنسَانُ يُفَكِّرُ (al-insān yufakkiru)
Translation: The human thinks.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: الْإِنسَانُ يَتَعَلَّمُ (al-insān yata‘allamu)
Translation: The human learns.
4. لَفِي (lafī) - Is in

Arabic: لَفِي الْبَيْتِ (lafī al-bayt)
Translation: Is in the house.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: لَفِي الْمَدرَسَةِ (lafī al-madrasah)
Translation: Is in the school.
5. خُسْرٍ (khusr) - Loss
5. خُسْرٍ (khusr) - Loss
Example Sentence:
Arabic: خُسْرٌ كَبِيرٌ (khusr kabīr)
Translation: A big loss.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: خُسْرٌ مُتَتَابِعٌ (khusr mutatābi‘)
Translation: A continuous loss.
6. إِلَّا (illā) - Except

Arabic: إِلَّا أَنْتَ (illā anta)
Translation: Except you.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: إِلَّا اللَّـهَ (illā allāh)
Translation: Except Allah.
7. الَّذِينَ (alladhīna) - Those who

Arabic: الَّذِينَ يَتَعَلَّمُونَ (alladhīna yata‘allamūn)
Translation: Those who learn.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: الَّذِينَ يَسْتَمِعُونَ (alladhīna yastami‘ūn)
Translation: Those who listen.
8. آمَنُوا (āmānū) - Believed

Example Sentence:
Arabic: آمَنُوا بِالرَّسُولِ (āmānū bi ar-rasūl)
Translation: They believed in the Prophet.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: آمَنُوا بِالْكِتَابِ (āmānū bil-kitāb)
Translation: They believed in the Book.
9. وَعَمِلُوا (wa ‘amilū) - And did

Example Sentence:
Arabic: وَعَمِلُوا بَجِدٍّ (wa ‘amilū bijidd)
Translation: And did diligently.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: وَعَمِلُوا بِإِخْلَاصٍ (wa ‘amilū bi-ikhlaṣ)
Translation: And did sincerely.
10. الصَّالِحَاتِ (as-ṣāliḥāt) - Righteous deeds

Example Sentence:
Arabic: الصَّالِحَاتُ مُهِمَّةٌ (as-ṣāliḥāt muhimmah)
Translation: Righteous deeds are important.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: الصَّالِحَاتُ تُقَرِّبُ مِنَ اللَّـهِ (as-ṣāliḥāt tuqarribu min allāh)
Translation: Righteous deeds bring one closer to Allah.
11. وَتَوَاصَوْا (wa tawāsaw) - And advised each other

Arabic: وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْصَّبْرِ (wa tawāsaw biṣ-ṣabr)
Translation: And advised each other to be patient.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ (wa tawāsaw bil-ḥaqq)
Translation: And advised each other to uphold the truth.
12. بِالْحَقِّ (bil-ḥaqq) - With truth

Arabic: بِالْحَقِّ وَالْعَدْلِ (bil-ḥaqq wa al-‘adl)
Translation: With truth and justice.

Arabic: بِالْحَقِّ وَالصَّدْقِ (bil-ḥaqq wa aṣ-ṣidq)
Translation: With truth and honesty.
13. وَتَوَاصَوْا (wa tawāsaw) - And advised each other

Arabic: وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْخَيْرِ (wa tawāsaw bil-khayr)
Translation: And advised each other to do good.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ (wa tawāsaw biṣ-ṣabr)
Translation: And advised each other to be patient.
14. بِالصَّبْرِ (biṣ-ṣabr) - With patience

Arabic: بِالصَّبْرِ نَجْتَازُ الصِّعَابَ (biṣ-ṣabr najtāz as-ṣa‘āb)
Translation: With patience, we overcome difficulties.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: بِالصَّبْرِ نَصِلُ إِلَى النَّجَاحِ (biṣ-ṣabr naṣilu ilā an-najāḥ)
Translation: With patience, we reach success.
15. مَعَ (ma‘a) - With

Arabic: مَعَ أَصْدِقَائِي (ma‘a aṣdīqā’ī)
Translation: With my friends.
Example Sentence:
Arabic: مَعَ عَائِلَتِي (ma‘a ‘ā'ilatī)
Translation: With my family.
