Safety
APLE asked for data from PITS to see some safety trends at certain locations
Staffing and subbing
APLE staff getting pulled frequently
APLE has had discussions with HR, Public Services and Jason about this issue
No solutions were offered
Full-time floating subs (part of APLE) were offered as idea to fill the gaps
There are some HR subs: only 1 or 2 are picking up hours
Andrea Francis will be joining labor management meetings with HR
Paid lunches are occasionally being used to fill limited availability
Some specialists are being pulled because they are scheduled at certain times so they are available to be pulled to fill in
Some people being pulled to cover off desk time for other librarians
Just 2 people (clerks or librarians) need to open and close a branch, some places want 2 librarians for safety reasons
Self-evaluation questions
Concerns raised to HR about the evaluation
HR and Public Services acknowledged it was not well done.
Some people lost their first evaluation because it closed before they could be submitted.
Managers also hadn’t done what they needed in Kronos which made it more complicated.
Kronos is making the process more complicated
Can we ask for copies of the questions next year?
Reference Policy
A draft was created by work group doing the reference training
Initially going to be taken to board for a vote, should have come to us first
Officers got a chance to look it over and correct it
New draft looks better
New Business
HR Assignment
Sherryl Grauman will be on sick leave
These HR personnel will be handling these areas:
Jacey—recruitment, orientation, wellness
Tom—leaves, labor relations, UKG/Kronos
Rhonda—training, benefits, engagement
Stacey and Kim—administrative support
Ohio Ethics Law Reviews happening?
Every year we are supposed to read through it.
All public employees in Ohio must read it annually
A good reminder to be mindful about what we can and can’t do as public workers
Off Desk Time - Does everyone get enough?
Inadequate for most of our librarians to get things done throughout the week
At best, each librarian gets 1-2 hours off a day, but that doesn’t happen a lot.
No off-desk time Fridays or Saturdays
Vehicle Accident Checklist
Concerns about some of the things we are being asked to do
We are asked to leave our cars at the scene of accident
We are asked to take a cab to a hospital for drug test
We need to call police,
Aren’t police trained to indicate if a person is on drugs or other substances?
They should send a unit from the library out to do all this
Over the past few years we have a lot more policies being put into effect
One employee was told they couldn’t carpool before or after work with other employees.
Technology Help
1-on-1 help by appointment; Jotform created
A conversation about this happened at Adult Services meeting
Job description was changed to add technology help
The library wanted to push more classes, but that was changed to 1-to-1
APLE met with Allison Fiscus and Cathy Bartel in December about 1-to-1
Some Children’s Librarians are doing these 1-on-1, but only Adult Librarian description has been changed
What technology are we supposed to be able to teach people?
There were no clear instructions given for how 1-to-1 is supposed to work
Jotform lets you pick many different things to learn
We only have 1 hour to teach patrons
Allison said if we don’t know something, we should be able to learn it and teach patrons
Can they change the wording in ACE from Outreach to Mobile Services for submitting stats?
APLE will talk with HR and Andrea about the 1-on-1
Youth librarians should reach out to APLE with concerns
Mott is still offering classes
Patrons should have a scheduled time, not just anytime they want
Librarians sacrificing off-desk time to do these trainings
Open Floor
Accidents at work
We need to take a cab to the hospital for drug test
What is the threshold for the injury?
Do we need to do this for a papercut?
There will be a bond in the fall for building funds on the ballot
Please come to Staff Awards
Adjourn: 8:05
