Old Business
Sundays: Be sure to put in notes when you sign up if you don’t want to work more than one Sunday a month.
Safety Committee
The next meeting is on June 3, 2022.
Born from the CWA contract with a requirement to meet with Jeff Sabo and talk about safety.
The first meeting was more about environmental issues. There will also be a discussion about security issues.
If you are ever feeling unsafe and your manager isn’t cooperating, reach out to Irene Blue, Jeff Sab or APLE chairs.
We need more training and discussion on different situations, including how to handle blood-born pathogens and de-escalation training. Steve and Teresa, as well Erin DeWitt and David Bush are on the committee.
Question was sent into Direct Line: Why don’t we have a social worker?
There was a presentation at PLA about having social workers in the library. Could we have some information from the people who saw it?
Should we send out a survey to staff asking them to input questions they get that a social worker might help with?
Should we use Gimlet in the branches?
We never have gotten reports from the Gimlet surveys…can we see the results of the reference surveys?
Cell Phone Policy
Language in the policy wasn’t accurate. The lawyer for UAW will look over language and draft something for HR.
New Business
Staffing / Subbing / Lunch Coverage
Teresa talked with Jason about staffing issues, including how frequently staff are being sent to other branches for coverage.
There are at least 3 open positions to be filled, with suggestions from APLE for other places we could use a librarian.
Please email the chairs if you are being pulled frequently.
You should not be pulled into another branch and work the desk while managers go in their office. Please let the chairs know if this is happening.
CWA is also being pulled frequently.
Safety is also an issue, for instance, if someone is pulled from a branch or department and the other librarian is left alone.
Is there a door count for Main departments?
Make sure you put every program and meeting on your schedules.
Is anyone tracking the number of hours being covered weekly?
We should request this data from HR and create a Google Doc for APLE members to fill out with the number of hours they are spending at other branches every week.
Sub requests go to regional managers first. Then, it goes to branch services.
APLES to APLES
Steve had a proposal once we get all our positions filled to have 2 members to swap with each other for a day to get experience in other places and positions.
Open Floor
TBS – Teresa brought concerns to Jason about technology issues we are seeing throughout the system, including computer freezes and mobile printing.
Kent is being covered by Mott manager Celeste Felix Taylor.
CWA members are having skip meetings. Skip meetings are when a member of the management team meets with one of their employees' direct reports. So the manager would skip the circ supervisor and meet with the clerical staff or when Andrea skips the regional managers and meets with the branch managers. APLE will request this as well.
Training new employees in the branches does not seem to be going well. HR is aware of the issue.
If you have a contract question, don’t just guess, ask chairs or look at the contract on the Intranet.
We need to change language about Sunday hours, banking hours. You don’t have to take time and a half when you work a Sunday, you can bank those hours instead. You can bank up to 80 hours.
APLE leadership will have more officer meetings during work time on opposite months from regular meetings.
Adjourn–7:24.
