The Association of Public Library Employees (APLE) represents dedicated employees essential to the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library's ability to provide high-quality service to our community.
Founded in 1984, APLE was established by library staff seeking a stronger voice in their workplace. Our members sought improved job security, better safety conditions, and greater respect. On June 18, 1987, the State Employment Relations Board officially recognized APLE as the collective bargaining representative for all librarians and non-managerial professional employees of the library.
Our first collective bargaining agreement with the library was ratified in 1990. Initially affiliated with the American Maritime Officers (AMO) union, we joined the United Auto Workers (UAW) in 2003, becoming a part of UAW Local 5242. This Local also represents employees of the Toledo Public Schools and the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA). As an amalgamated Local, our membership comprises employees from multiple workplaces.
With close to 40 years of dedicated service, APLE remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of our members and ensuring the continued success of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.
