Reasons why this issue is important:
--Women disproportionately take on the caregiving responsibilities for loved one’s suffering from illness, disability or age. The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers has studied workers who are “Working while Caring” and the impact that it has on their lives.
--The Rosalynn Carter Institute’s main findings from their Invisible Overtime Study:
Most caregivers who are working while caring are putting in an additional 20 caregiving hours per week, on top of working 40 hours
The cost of working while caring is $19,000 in unpaid caregiving time and just over $20,000 in out of pocket expenses
One-third of caregivers leave the workforce due to their inability to afford hire help, or to find quality help, or meet the demand of their existing work schedule.
Caregiving disrupts work life balance, work, and career opportunities.
