GP Shifter (Reverse Shift)

I do this mod to all my bikes. Some argue that GP / Reverse shift should only be used on tracks, but I beg to differ. Only riders who have accustomed to this style will enjoy the true happiness this mod brings, even for daily commute. I researched online thru a few Triumph forums and did not come across a single success story. On some bikes such as a Yamaha R6 2006 to 2018 (essentially the same bike), the GP shift can be easily done without any replacement of parts but by only rotating the linkage 180 degrees.

I took a gamble by getting hold of Sato rearsets, purely based on visual possibility. The engineering and tooling quality is very good. Flipping the linkage at the crankcase was not possible due to the shape of the case cover and I didn’t like the idea of using extended linkages that pushes the shift rod out, and essentially the rearset.

I felt Sato rearset had the best potential to flip the shift lever based on images available. I clarified with Sato, to which they promptly responded that it may be possible but movement may be limited and potential alignment issues. Also, the toe pegs screws into a recess and that may impact the shift rod once flipped.

With this bike, I didn’t want to make the rearset “racier” by going further back and higher, but to achieve the GP shift this seemed to be the only route. The added benefit that came with this replacement was my knees grip the tank better. The rear master is kinda hidden nicely, but the way it mounts to the lever can be better engineered.

As visible here, I managed to fit the flipped shift lever and you can see see the toe peg screw recess exposed. This did not impact the sturdiness. GP shift worked perfect, and the tolerances between bolts, rearsets and rods were on the limit. I added a washer of about 1.5mm thickness to push out the lever. Otherwise the link rod bolt will collide with the rearset.

NOTE: I moved the linkage by just one tooth

The tolerance as shown here with the 1.5mm spacer installed. Otherwise the bolt will collide with the rearset.

I got the PK quickshifter from eBay which can be directly connected to the OEM harness. The details can be easily found on Triumph forums. As I did the GP shift mod, I got the Push type.

While researching further on Sato website, I noticed they had 2 setups for ZX10 2016, Standard and GP shift. I thereafter ordered the ZX10 2016 Shift Lever and Shift Rod (gamble again), which now fitted perfectly for the quickshifter and with toe pegs and screws on the correct side. The 1.5mm washer which I used as a spacer was no longer needed.

You will need this connector for the quickshifter function which I got from Aliexpress, if you don’t want to splice the OEM wire harness.
