His and Hers

Watching HGTV gave alot of ideas for home designs. The his and hers toilet is not a very common design for apartments in Singapore as toilets are typically small. The toilet in our new place was squarish in shape which gave a possibility to create one. Being budget constrained, I decided to DIY as much as possible.

The developer’s base design gave a designer sink, a rectangular mirror and a shower area. First step, I disconnected the sink and sold if off thru a online platform. The mirror was donated to my new office and the shower glass was discarded.

Removal of the mirror left this hollow section.

From IKEA, the 2 toilet cabs and a ready made laminated kitchen counter was purchased. The sinks and the hot & cold faucets were purchased from a local distributor. In my previous home, I installed a water heater where I first learnt plumbing skills from YouTube. That knowledge has stayed with me and again reapplied here. Simply said, the tap and sink drain lines had to be Tee’d. The counter was 3 cm too long. Not having a jigsaw, I used a angle grinder to trim it off which took forever.

The more or less completed sink.

A new shower screen was installed. Instead of hacking the floors and adding a cement curb, I proposed the use of aluminum tubular bars which were easy to silicone stick. The new shower space has enough space for a decent shower and also keeps the rest of the toilet area dry. The shower screen installer was hesitant to use aluminum, but now has begun to adopt it in many of their projects. It does not rust and and being tubular, its has good strength and is easy to cut to shape, which speeds up the installation time.

Final completed product. More deco pieces came from IKEA. If you zoom into detail, I admit the woodwork and silicone could have been done better. For the mirror, I went for the largest possible size that could fit thru the lift to reach the apartment.
