below is a profile of Jean Kirstein, a graduate of the 104th Training Corps who grew into a natural leader within the Scout Regiment.
Jean Kirstein is a graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps, ranking 6th best among his class. Originally from the Trost District of Wall Rose, Jean initially aspired to join the Military Police Regiment in pursuit of a safe and comfortable life within the inner walls. However, over time, he matured into a capable and reliable soldier, ultimately choosing to dedicate himself to the Scout Regiment despite the constant danger.
Jean is a young man with short, ash-brown hair that is trimmed shorter on the sides and back, giving them a darker shade. His light-brown eyes carry an intense and sharp look, often compared to the fierce gaze of Eren Yeager. Jean has a long face, sometimes mockingly referred to as a “horse face,” and usually wears a scowl that makes him look perpetually irritated. He is of average height with a muscular build, fitting for a soldier.
In his casual attire, Jean often wore a white button-up shirt, dark trousers, and a dark-brown vest. By the year 854, Jean had matured significantly, growing taller at 190 centimeters, and sporting a goatee along with longer hair. During the Marley infiltration, he wore the black Scout Regiment uniform equipped with anti-personnel omni-directional mobility gear.
Jean is known for his blunt and pragmatic personality. He rarely restrains himself when speaking, often voicing his thoughts even when they cause conflict. Early on, he displayed a strong aversion to danger and openly admitted his desire to live safely within the walls, far from the Titans. His cynicism led him to doubt humanity’s chances of survival, clashing with more idealistic individuals like Eren.
Despite these flaws, Jean possessed a natural talent for leadership. His ability to understand others’ perspectives and judge situations realistically earned him recognition from his peers, particularly Marco Bott, who described Jean as a natural leader. In moments of crisis, such as the Battle of Trost, Jean was able to rally disorganized soldiers and give them direction. He later proved his bravery when confronting the Female Titan, risking his life to protect his comrades even when defeat seemed inevitable.
Though Jean often presented himself as self-centered, he placed immense value on his comrades’ lives. He was deeply shaken whenever forced to abandon allies, and his conscience made him critical of certain leadership decisions, such as Erwin Smith’s choice to keep secrets from his troops at the cost of many lives. Over time, Jean became more level-headed, evolving from a hot-headed cadet into a dependable strategist, though he continued to approach life with caution and doubt.
Childhood: Jean was raised in Trost District under the care of his mother. His early life was peaceful, and his ambition was to join the Military Police Regiment to live a comfortable life in Wall Sina.
104th Cadet Corps: Jean entered training with this goal in mind, ranking 6th overall in his class. During this time, he often clashed with Eren Yeager over ideals and survival, but began to show signs of leadership potential. His rivalry with Eren, while heated, became an important part of his growth.
Scout Regiment: Despite his initial reluctance, Jean eventually chose the path of the Scouts. He began to embody responsibility and maturity, placing the survival of humanity above his own comfort. His leadership during battles like Trost and the confrontation with the Female Titan highlighted his growth as a soldier.
Year 854 and Marley Campaign: By this time, Jean had become one of the Scouts' most trusted leaders, balancing pragmatism with compassion. His tactical mind and ability to remain calm in battle made him a crucial asset. During the infiltration of Marley, Jean’s development from a once self-serving cadet into a true leader became fully evident.
