The Armored Titan was one of the Nine Titans, most famously inherited by Reiner Braun. Its defining trait was the all-encompassing armor-like skin plates covering its entire body, giving it both overwhelming offensive power and nearly impenetrable defense. Alongside its durability, the Armored Titan could also utilize hardening techniques, granting it adaptability in combat. While it was one of the most fearsome Titans on the battlefield, its heavy armor came with drawbacks, such as reduced speed and weaknesses against advanced anti-Titan weaponry.
The most iconic ability of the Armored Titan was its Armored Skin. The Titan’s body was covered in hardened, plated segments capable of withstanding immense amounts of force. This armor allowed it to survive direct cannon fire, break ultrahard steel blades of ODM gear with ease, and even endure the Colossal Titan’s explosive transformation. Offensively, this plating turned the Armored Titan into a living battering ram, able to demolish Wall Maria’s outer gate in a single charge. However, the armor had limitations. It proved vulnerable to more advanced weaponry, such as the Mid-East Allied Forces’ anti-Titan artillery, which could penetrate its plating.
Despite its strength, the armor came with a critical disadvantage: reduced speed and agility. When fully armored, the Titan could only achieve moderate running speed, a major weakness in fast-paced battles. To counteract this, the user could shed portions of the armor—for example, leaving the areas behind the knees unarmored. This sacrifice of protection allowed the Armored Titan to regain incredible mobility, enabling it to sprint and maneuver at high speed when necessary.
Another weakness lay in its connection to the Founding Titan’s power. If the Founding Titan’s wielder willed it, the hardened skin of the Armored Titan could be made to crumble away completely, leaving the Titan highly vulnerable. However, this effect only applied to its current transformation, as the Titan would regain its protective armor upon transforming again.
In addition to its armor, the Armored Titan could employ Hardening, similar to the Female Titan. This ability allowed it to reinforce parts of its body with crystal-like structures, enhancing its already formidable defense. The Titan could also generate hardened claws on its hands and feet, which provided both combat advantages and utility. Reiner notably used these claws to scale the Walls of Shiganshina District with ease, demonstrating the Titan’s versatility beyond brute force.
The Armored Titan stood as a terrifying symbol of Marley’s military strength, embodying a balance between destructive power and defense, though at the cost of speed and adaptability against modern weaponry.
