Armin Arlert is a soldier of the Scout Regiment and one of the central protagonists of Attack on Titan. He is the childhood friend of Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackermann, known for his brilliant intellect, sharp intuition, and strategic thinking. Despite his initial lack of physical strength and confidence, Armin proves himself indispensable through his ability to devise clever tactics that often save his comrades. Later, he inherits the power of the Colossal Titan, becoming one of humanity’s strongest assets.
Armin has a slender build and is shorter and less muscular than most of his peers in the 104th Cadet Corps. He is easily recognized by his blond hair cut in a bowl style and his large blue eyes, which often reflect his thoughtful and earnest nature. Though he appears frail compared to other soldiers, his expressions and demeanor radiate sincerity, curiosity, and determination. After inheriting the Colossal Titan, his appearance remains youthful, though his Titan form is a towering 60-meter giant, skeletal and steam-emitting, capable of catastrophic destruction.
Armin is highly intelligent, analytical, and compassionate. Early in his training, he struggled with low self-esteem and often doubted his worth compared to stronger soldiers like Eren and Mikasa. However, his insightful mind consistently provided life-saving strategies, earning the trust and respect of his comrades. Armin embodies a strong sense of morality and empathy, often contemplating the consequences of violence and the value of freedom. Despite his kindness, he is willing to make difficult and brutal decisions if it means protecting humanity’s future. His blend of innocence, courage, and intellect defines his character growth throughout the series.
Childhood: Born in Shiganshina District, Armin grew up close to Eren and Mikasa. He often felt physically weak and was bullied by other children, but his curiosity about the outside world and desire for freedom inspired Eren. His fascination with books about the ocean, deserts, and the world beyond the Walls sparked his dream of exploration.
104th Cadet Corps: Armin joined the cadets alongside his friends, struggling with combat and endurance training. Despite his shortcomings, he began to prove himself through his strategic brilliance, earning respect after helping save countless soldiers during the Battle of Trost.
Scout Regiment: After graduation, Armin joined the Scouts, continuing to show his tactical genius. He played crucial roles in identifying enemy infiltrators, devising counter-strategies, and supporting missions against the Titans.
Battle of Shiganshina: During the decisive fight against Bertholdt Hoover, Armin displayed extreme courage. He sacrificed himself in a near-suicidal plan, using his body to distract the Colossal Titan with burning steam while Eren attacked. Though mortally wounded, Armin was later chosen over Erwin Smith to inherit the Colossal Titan, securing his survival and future importance.
Later Years: As a Titan shifter, Armin struggled with the burden of Erwin’s sacrifice and the immense destructive power he now wielded. Despite this, he became a key leader and moral compass within the Scouts, guiding decisions during conflicts with Marley and Eren Yeager’s faction. Armin’s compassion, intelligence, and courage continue to shape him as one of humanity’s greatest leaders, embodying the dream of freedom beyond the Walls.
