Below is a profile of Hannes, a unit captain of the Garrison Regiment and a lifelong friend of the Yeager family. Best remembered for saving Eren and Mikasa during the fall of Wall Maria, he carried the heavy burden of failing to protect Carla Yeager from the Titan that killed her. His life and choices reflected both the weaknesses and the courage of ordinary soldiers living within the Walls.
Hannes was a tall, well-built man with short blond hair, a thin dark mustache, and golden hazel eyes. He wore the standard Garrison uniform with a gray undershirt, embodying the look of a seasoned soldier.
Hannes was kind-hearted, good-natured, and often irresponsible due to his fondness for drinking. Despite this, he deeply cared for Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, stepping into a guardian-like role after Carla’s death. Five years after the fall of Wall Maria, he matured into a more dutiful soldier, determined to face the Titan that haunted his past. His courage, though late-blooming, ultimately defined his final stand.
Before the fall of Wall Maria, Hannes spent much of his time drinking and socializing, embodying the Garrison’s reputation for complacency.
When the Titans breached Shiganshina in 845, he saved Eren and Mikasa from the Smiling Titan but was unable to save Carla, an act that left him with years of guilt and regret.
He developed a strong bond with the Yeager children afterward, looking out for them as they grew up within the Walls.
By 850, Hannes had become more serious about his duties. During the battle to rescue Eren from Reiner and Bertholdt, he chose to fight the Smiling Titan once more in an attempt to redeem himself.
Despite his bravery, he was ultimately killed in the confrontation, leaving behind a legacy of flawed humanity, deep loyalty, and bittersweet courage.
