Budapest

saying peace

Budapest

The bullet holes

In city walls

Endure.

Those in front

Of the gun,

And those behind,

Do not.

The tour guide

Speaks of endurance,

Invasions,

Occupations,

Uprisings.

We Hungarians

Endure.

The ‘we’

(The dangerous we)

That is not ‘they,’

The ‘us’

That is not ‘them.’

And yet

The Other

Is in bodies,

And eyes

And minds,

And blood.

The Slav

The Turk

And the refugee.

The Hungarian

Is ‘they’ too

Perhaps

Only the ‘you’

Endures.

‘You’

Spoken with reverence

And an open heart

‘I’

Mindful of debt.

You,

Thou,

Du,

Te.

This alone

Endures

Longer than bullets

And men.

The theme today is Peace in Communities

People are often suspicious of newcomers, or people who seem different to them. They forget, however, that the whole of human history is made up of immigration, global trade, invasions and conquests.

  • do some research. What groups have settled in the area where you live? Look as far back as you can.

  • how has this affected language and culture?

  • what can you do to make new arrivals in your community feel welcome today?
