peace and water

Cambridge PGCE Music

saying peace

Listen to this bespoke composition and poem, follow the lyrics and reflect.

Gracefully gliding in oceans green

The ways of the turtle are serene.

From humble beginnings upon Boa Vista Island,

They quest for the sea, away from the dryland.

Slowly searching for food to survive,

These emerald creatures do not always thrive.

With welded shield fastened to their flesh,

they’re designed for treasuring not to enmesh.

Around 5 trillion pieces of plastic pollute,

So how long will the people remain so mute?

Jade is the colour of tranquillity and peace,

Jade is the colour of these beauteous beasts.

Jaded is the meaning and jaded are our thoughts,

Warped are their bodies, waned and wrought.

Chelonia is its name and Chelonia we sustain.

These cerulean-dwellers of cyan seas,

return to their birthplace to give life once again.

doing peace

The theme today is Peace and our Planet.

As guest hosts, the Music PGCE (teacher training programme) at University of Cambridge, have created 5 peace activities, based on the elements, centred on the theme of peace and our planet. Today's element is water:

Activities:

  • Imagine yourself as an endangered sea animal whose habitat is similarly threatened by human activity, pollution, etc. Compose your own piece of music based on characteristics you associate with this sea creature.

  • Ask students to write a short, four/five-line poem using these words from the poem (or using their own words).

  • Students can then set their poems to music. See the simple backing track for students to use (recorded above).
