awakening

saying peace

Awakening

The dreaming streets stir.

Streetlamps blink

And give up their light

To the day.

The digger shudders

And stretches its arm,

Resuming its clawing

As if never stopped.

The builders’ radio

Pounds the silence.

The hum of the trunk road

Gives a clarion call.

The slithering trains

On glistening tracks

Imbibe and disgorge

Their occupants once more.

The cars clear their throats

And begin to trace

The neural pathways

Of our collective madness.

The large-headed lorries,

Backless for a while,

Take up the yoke anew

And shoulder their burdens.

The people emerge blinking,

Turning outwards once again.

Will they reclaim the insanity

That is theirs for the taking?

The circling moon

Cries to the sun,

And the green blue planet

Cries to the universe

For a vaccine.

doing peace

The theme today is Peace and our Planet and Peace And Justice

Since COVID19, the world has slowed down, and Nature has benefitted from reductions in human activity. The picture above shows mountain goats who were spotted on the high street in Llandudno, Wales, UK on 31 March 2020. Photograph: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images. Normally they stay on the limestone headland of Great Orme, but the decrease in human activity led them to venture further afield.

  • Do some research – how is the slow-down in global activity during COVID19 impacting on the planet?

  • What do you think are the positive and negative things that will happen when we emerge from restrictions and lockdowns?

  • Find a picture that captures this moment in history, and shows the planet starting to breathe when we couldn’t

  • Write a poem about it
