Agriculture Science Courses

INTRODUCTION TO AGRISCIENCE 3450 (One Term) (Elective Credit Only)

Grades 9, 10, 11

Course Description: This course is the foundation for all Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources pathways. It introduces the major areas of scientific agricultural production and research; presents problem solving lessons and introductory skills and knowledge in agricultural science and agri-related technologies. Classroom and laboratory activities are supplemented through Supervised Agricultural Experiences and leadership programs and activities (FFA).

FISH, FORESTRY & WILDLIFE (SE) - 3452/3453 (Two Terms)

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course serves as the introductory level course for the Natural Resources Career Pathway. Students will explore the study of fish, forestry, wildlife, Wisconsin’s natural resources, and begin to develop skills and knowledge required for employment in occupations related to forestry, wildlife, natural resources management, and conservation. Instruction is also provided in safety practices and leadership development. GTC TRANSCRIPTED CREDIT

COMPANION ANIMAL CARE (SE) 3458 (One Term)


Prerequisite: 9-10 INTRODUCTION TO AGRISCIENCE 11-12 No Prerequisite

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course is designed to prepare students for careers in the field of animal science, enhance student academic knowledge and skills, help them acquire knowledge and skills related to animal systems, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements, and industry expectations. This course will help students to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer knowledge and skills in a laboratory and classroom setting. Small animals will be included in the course of study including, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, avian, dogs, and cats. Preference will be given to Juniors and Seniors..

ANIMAL SCIENCE (SE) 3454/3455 (Two Terms)

Prerequisite: 9-10 INTRODUCTION TO AGRISCIENCE 11-12 No Prerequisite

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course will explore the sciences involved in animal production. Instruction will lead students through animal anatomy and physiology, reproduction, nutrition, health issues, marketing, and animal products. Students will gain knowledge and skills through direct instruction, labs, and field trips. This information will tie into students’ FFA, Career Development Events, and Supervised Agricultural Experiences.



VETERINARY SCIENCE (SE) 3459 (One Term)

Prerequisite: COMPANION ANIMAL CARE (SMALL ANIMAL CARE) and ANIMAL SCIENCE or CONSENT OF INSTRUCTOR

Grades 11, 12

Course Description: The hip bone is connected to the what bone? In this one term class, students will journey from the animal’s nose to the tip of its tail studying the systems, muscles, tissues, organs and bones along the way. In addition, students will have the chance to practice veterinary techniques and gain valuable experience through hands-on laboratory exercise while learning about potential careers. If you like to work with animals and are thinking about entering an animal field, then this class is for you!



INTRODUCTORY HORTICULTURE (SE) 3456/3457 (Two Terms)

Prerequisite: 9-10 INTRODUCTION TO AGRISCIENCE 11-12 No Prerequisite

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course provides instruction related to the broad field of horticulture with the emphasis on the scientific and technical knowledge related to the discipline, as well as the ways we use this knowledge to establish a relationship with our environment. Topics in this course include information on plant structure and function, plant growth, plant diversity, basic plant identification, soil analysis, gardening and land use, landscape design, floral design, and more. Time will be spent in the classroom, laboratory, outside (as weather permits), and in the green house.

AGRIBUSINESS - 3451 (One Term)

Grades 10, 11, 12

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Agriscience

Course Description: This course has been designed to give you a sound understanding of what it takes to manage an agricultural business. These practices will be useful for your personal financial management and will also expose you to career opportunities in the agribusiness management field.

AG LEADERSHIP 3460 (One Term)

Grades 10, 11, 12

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Agriscience

Course Description: This class is designed to discuss leadership and careers. We will look at the skills necessary to be a leader, how to work as a team, manage people, and many career-related things as well. Topics will include team building exercises, personality profiles, career interest profiling, parliamentary procedure, and specific leadership qualities, with others to be developed from student interest. This class will be highly project-oriented and will include writing assignments, team and individual projects, and journals.
