All performance music courses have a performance requirement outside of the regular school day that will be a large part of the term grade.

All Music courses are a 1 term, full block, .5 credit course.

There is an audition requirement for some courses.

CONCERT CHOIR 3565/3566 and 3567/3568 (1 & 2, 3 & 4 or ALL FOUR TERMS)

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite - Consent of Instructor

Course Description: Concert Choir is a non-auditioned choir, open to any student in any grade level. This is an introductory course. Students will sing music written in two and three parts. Students will focus on the development of vocal skills and learn basic musicianship. Quality training is given on how to use the voice and body correctly while singing. No previous experience necessary.


CHAMBER CHOIR 3575/3576 and 3577/3578 (1 & 2, 3 & 4 or ALL FOUR TERMS)

Prerequisite: Consent of Instructor

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: Chamber Choir is an auditioned choir. Students must audition before the start of the course in order to participate in this class. Students must show moderate to exemplar music theory skills, possess a moderate understanding of appropriate vocal production, and show that they are a positive and productive contributor to the choral class. The course itself offers an opportunity for students to hone their individual and group musicianship, and to study a variety of music from all time periods and genres. The class performs music written for SAB and SATB. Quality training is given on how to us the voice and body correctly while singing. Moderate to high-level music theory is a large part of the class curriculum. Students are expected to perform at numerous community events throughout the year. Members who fail to adhere to attendance, attitude, and daily effort guidelines will be dropped from this group.


CONCERT BAND 3541/3542 and 3543/3544 (1 & 2, 3 & 4 or ALL FOUR TERMS)

Any and all students with previous experience on a brass, woodwind, percussion, keyboard, or string instruments are invited to join the Union Grove High School Band! Yes, even a string instrument! We’ll make it work!

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: We perform 1 major concert a quarter (October, December, March, and May) plus we join in on the football and basketball events with the PEP BAND (this is not a marching band). My goal is to also have a trip every year, out of state. A minor trip every other year and a major trip the opposite years of the minor trip. Minor trips are 1-2 days and usually are within a 6 hour drive and major trips are 4-8 days and about 20 – 24 hour drive away from school.

Come see Mr. Fell in the band room for more information and learn about the other great events that the band participates in.

Course Requirements:

    • Band is every day and students are required to have their instruments every day.

    • Students sign-up for a minimum of 3 lessons a quarter with Mr. Fell during the lunch period. This is to make sure you are successful and fix any problems you are having (especially if you do not take private lessons).

    • All performances and lessons are required and count towards the students’ band grades.

Also:

    • Be a positive, helpful person

    • Show up to all rehearsals and concerts

    • Practice your music outside of rehearsal

    • Be open to learning

BAND FEES: Students are required to either own/rent their own instrument (in good repair) or borrow one from the school, and also own an appropriate method book. All students are required to own a pep band t-shirt ($10.00).


JAZZ ENSEMBLE This will run during BRONCOS - Please sign up with Mr. Fell .25 credit per term

Do Dat Da Doo, Do Dat Dat Da Doo!

Pre-requisite: Consent of high school instructor /8th grade band instructor recommendation

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: Jazz is an American art form and if you want a way to expressive yourself, why not with the Union Grove High School Jazz Ensemble! We’ll be playing all different types of genres, including: Salsa, Afro-Cuban, Funk, Rhythm & Blues, Zydeco, Fusion, Blues, Rock, and Jazz…to name just a few! So bring your Sax, Trumpet, French Horn, Cello, Flute, Harmonica, Guitar, Trombone, Viola, Piano,Even your Voice!, etc… and join the Jazz Ensemble

Course Requirements:

    • Be a positive, helpful person

    • Show up to all rehearsals and concerts

    • Practice your music outside of rehearsal

    • Be open to learning


BEGINNING GUITAR 3550 (1 Term)

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: Beginning guitar starts the student from the point of no music reading knowledge to being able to read basic music notation and perform basic melodies. Basic chords will also be introduced, as well as strumming techniques. Advanced students can be taught intermediate to advanced chords and techniques. (May be repeated for credit)


MUSIC THEORY I 3590 (1 Term)

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: Basic introduction to notes, symbols, intervals, scales (major, minor), modes and ear training. Next would be diatonic harmony, cadences, voice leading chords, modulation, variations, forms and chromaticism.
