THE FOLLOWING COURSES ARE OFFERED EVERY YEAR

ART FUNDAMENTALS 3500 (One Term)


Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: Art Fundamentals is a one term class that introduces and develops the various skills and concepts found in both two dimensional and three dimensional art. The course is a “hands on” class where students work with a variety of art media as they learn art skills and concepts. THIS CLASS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR MOST OTHER ART CLASSES.


DIGITAL ART & DESIGN 3529 (One Term)


Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This course will introduce you to the exciting world of computer art and design where students will use technology to create original works of art. We will begin with a brief overview of digital photography before diving deep into the many functions of the software Adobe Photoshop. We will then use Adobe Illustrator to learn drawing and design on the computer. We will also explore motion-based design by creating photographic slideshows as well as graphic design and logo creation throughout the term. Students will be using computers every day in this class and will be expected to learn proper file handling and storage throughout the term. This course will count as either a Fine Arts or Tech credit.


ILLUSTRATION & AIRBRUSH 3511 (One Term)


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description:

This class is intended to expose students to the various mediums, techniques, vocabulary, and computer illustration equipment and software connected to the diverse world of illustration. Students will apply the skills and knowledge learned in this course to create diverse works of art and designs. Airbrush painting skills will also be taught and used alone, and in combination with other mediums. The learning experiences and course content also demonstrates to students the ways these medium and skills are connected to many professions and careers.

*Students do not need to possess a high level of traditional drawing skills to succeed in the class. However applying the craftsmanship skills taught in this course is necessary and an expectation.

This course will have a $5 course fee that will help with the maintenance of the compressors. This class will require students to purchase minimal supplies, costing approximately $16.00. These supplies will be required two weeks after starting the class. A list of required supplies will be given on the first day of class.


MEDIA ARTS: PHOTOGRAPHY, ANIMATION & VIDEO 3512 (One Term)


Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description:

This class is intended to expose students to the world of green screen photography, animation, audio and video production. These skills will be taught through various projects, and the use of professional grade equipment and materials. Students will have the opportunity to create various green screen animation and digital films using audio and video files they created. We will explore, research, and learn various computer and animated graphics techniques that are used in many professional media production and broadcasting careers. It is recommended that each student use their own digital DSLR cameras or a smartphone, but not required. Equipment will be available for use if one does not own one of these.

Both technical and creative editing and production skills will be taught using computer software. Students will also learn to manage digital files. This course will count as either a Fine Arts or Tech credit.


DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 3530 (One Term)


Prerequisite: Digital Art

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: If you love photography but want to go beyond taking selfies and Snapchats then this is the course for you. In this class we will study the history of photography and look at how artists have used and shaped photography since its invention until now. We will then learn the many functions and terms related to modern photography and use creativity and compositional guidelines to take unique pictures of a variety of themes and subjects. Students are expected to share their work and take part in class discussions relating to projects that you and your peers submit. You will also be expected to take frequent outdoor “walking tours” around our community in order to photograph numerous things. Students will use a digital camera provided by the school but will also be given the opportunity to use their own DSLR/high-end cell phone camera if they have one. Finally, you will expand upon your knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and use it to edit and improve your photography. This course will count as either a Fine Arts or Tech credit.


MULTIMEDIA & YEARBOOK DESIGN 3515/3516 (Two Terms)

Prerequisite: Digital Art, Media Arts, Intro to Engineering, Microsoft Essentials or Consent of Instructor

Course Description: The coursework will include a Publication Design component as students have the opportunity to plan, design, and produce the UGHS Broncos Yearbook and will also include visual and audio production for broadcast over mass media, visual networking, and graphic design platforms. The multimedia skills and techniques taught in this class will provide hands-on experience with industry standard software and equipment. This curriculum will include a wide range of visual media skills ranging from broadcast video production to digital print media and beyond so it will appeal to a diverse group of students. This course will count as either a Fine Arts or Tech credit.

CREATIVE SCULPTURE TECHNIQUES 3503 (One Term) Offered 2021-2022


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This is a one term class that introduces and develops a variety of concepts and techniques in sculpture (3D Design). At least one of the sculptures created will be functional. Most projects will be purely sculptural. A variety of media will be used. This course includes the creation of an altered book.


DEVELOPING SCULPTURE TECHNIQUES 3504 (One Term) Offered 2021-2022


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This is a one term class that will focus on constructing and creating hand built ceramic sculpture (3D Design). A variety of sculptures will be created using clay as the primary medium. Students who enjoy working with clay or who are interested in further developing ceramic sculpture techniques are strongly encouraged to take this course.


CULTURAL DRAWING & PAINTING 3505 (One Term) Offered 2021-2022


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Course Description: This class is designed around the study and practice of art by different cultures from around the world. Students will get a fun, hands-on experience making unique works of art. You will use both your own ideas and the cultures of others as inspiration for your creations.


TRADITIONAL DRAWING & PAINTING 3506 (One Term) Offered 2021-2022


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This class takes a traditional, observation-based approach to the practice of drawing and painting. Students will use sight to attempt to draw and paint realistically. It is highly recommended for artists interested in taking AP Studio Art and/or pursuing a college education in fine art.


APPLIED DESIGN 3509 (One Term) Offered 2021-2022


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Course Description:

This course will introduce students to the world of design and the ways design is applied in almost every facet of our daily lives. Students will explore various fields of design through research and hands-on projects that challenge students to think in creative and in inventive ways. Experience what the role of a designer is like and the role it plays in our culture as you learn the basics of design, production and marketing. The ultimate goal for this course is for students to gain hands-on, real-world experiences that guide them to and understanding of design and possibly connect this knowledge to their daily lives, and possibly a future career path!

Course Description: This is a one term class that will introduce and develop a wide variety of concepts and techniques in sculpture (3D Design). The emphasis of this course will be to create smaller sculptures so a wider range of techniques and materials can be experienced. This course is appropriate for students of varying skill levels and experience.


BASIC SCULPTURE TECHNIQUES 3502 (One Term) Offered 2022-2023

Course Description: This is a one term class that introduces and develops various concepts and techniques in sculpture (3D Design). CREATIVE DRAWING & PAINTING 3507 (One Term) - Offered 2022-2023


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Course Description: This class encourages students to use creativity and inventiveness to create unique and original works of art. Students will be expected to incorporate personal ideas and experiences in their work as well build on existing drawing and painting skills. Imagination and creative problem-solving are explored throughout the term and we will experiment with multiple types of media as they relate to drawing and painting.


DRAWING & PAINTING TECHNIQUES 3508 (One Term) Offered 2022-2023


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Course Description: This class is designed to give students experience with a variety of drawing and painting materials and methods. Color theory and value shading techniques will be explored in-depth. Drawing and painting from observation will also be emphasized. We will have many projects that overlap each other, so at times you will be working on more than one project.


BASIC DESIGN 3510 (One Term) - Offered 2022-2023


Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals

Course Description: This course introduces students to the world of design, and how design is applied in almost every facet of our daily lives. Each project will challenges students to think in creative and in inventive ways and experience what the role of a designer is like and the role it plays in our culture. You will explore a variety of design production techniques and learn how well known designers and their products have changed the world we live in. Students will also explore various 2D and 3D techniques to develop interesting designs and improve problem-solving skills. The ultimate goal for this course is for students to gain hands-on, real-world experiences and have an understanding of the ways design impacts everyday life. This knowledge could possibly guide students toward a future career path!


AP STUDIO ART 3519/3520 (Two Terms) Offered 2022-2023


Prerequisite: A or B grades in Art Fundamentals and two additional art courses or Consent of Instructor. Taking additional art courses will better prepare you for this course.

Course Description: In this rigorous course highly motivated students create artwork for a portfolio of work that aligns with the College Board AP Art and Design Program. It requires significant time spent on work outside of class. Student work in this course will demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over time. Portfolio work includes works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. Student artwork is created for the AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, or AP Drawing portfolio. College credit may be earned if a student submits a portfolio to the College Board in the spring and earns the required score. This class may be repeated once. Suggested coursework for each portfolio: Drawing: Traditional Drawing and 1 of the other 3 Drawing and Painting courses. 2-D Design: 1 of the 4 Drawing and Painting courses and Digital Art and Design, or Design or Illustration and Airbrush. 3-D Design: Applied sculpture and 1 of the other 3 Sculpture courses or Design.
