Juan began his PhD in Transportation Engineering in July 2025 under the supervision of Dr. Tae J. Kwon, focusing on traffic estimation through advanced modeling techniques in collaboration with the City of Edmonton.
He previously earned a Master of Science degree in Urban Spatial Science with distinction from University College London (UCL), where his dissertation - developed in partnership with the United Nations - centered on creating deep learning tools to automatically detect precarious areas in developing countries using satellite imagery. He also holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto.
Juan has worked as a data scientist for the non-profit Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED), applying his expertise in GIS, machine learning, and simulation modeling to lead global research projects aimed at protecting urban environments in the face of catastrophic events.
Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, Juan enjoys traveling, XC skiing, playing soccer, and cheering for his favourite team, Real Madrid.
