Congratulations to Dr. Tae J. Kwon and Mingjian Wu for having their paper "Location–allocation strategies for traffic counters—a citywide deployment" chosen as a Canadian Science Publishing Editor's Choice.
The study introduces an advanced geostatistical method coupled with a combinatorial algorithm to optimize traffic counter placement within Edmonton's road networks. By incorporating long-term data, their method accurately captures and reflects complex traffic behaviour patterns. The approach allows for fewer traffic counters while maintaining the same level of traffic monitoring, potentially saving up to 46.13% of equipment cost. The findings indicate that the innovative location-allocation strategy developed herein can pave the way for transportation authorities to manage urban traffic more efficiently and cost-effectively.
