Autonomous systems are set to play a major role in our next wave of technological advancement both in industry and our community lives. In this symposium, we seek to investigate the short-term and long-term goals through mutual dialogue. We will hear from key industry speakers as well as the Principal Investigators of the Autonomous Systems Initiative on their current work and how they see automation moving forward.
Mingjian and Qian presented their research on "estimating winter road surface conditions using deep learning" during the individual session of the program.
Winter road maintenance (WRM) plays a critical role in ensuring road safety and traffic mobility during the winter seasons. Conventional approaches include visual examination of camera images and on-site inspections by frequent road patrols, both of which are resource-intensive and difficult to be done in an efficient manner. To address these issues, this study aims at improving the efficiency of WRM operations by developing a deep learning (DL) model to automate the process of RSC image recognition.
