Ceramics is a semester course designed to introduce students to clay techniques in hand building and the basics of wheel throwing. The main focus of the course is to have students develop an aesthetic awareness of three-dimensional functional forms and explore the possibilities of working with clay. In addition, students will learn surface design and glazing techniques. This course will reinforce the Principles of Design while also giving students an opportunity to work independently, problem solve, think critically, and express their artistic individuality. Prerequisite: 2D Studio Art I OR 3D Studio Art

Ceramics II - Honors, Grades 11-12, Semester, 2.50 credits

Ceramics II builds upon the knowledge gained in Ceramics I. The main focus of the course will be throwing on the pottery wheel. Students will also continue developing technical knowledge and skills in surface design and glazing techniques. This course is specifically designed for ceramic artists who are highly dedicated to the craft and ready to work independently to create three-dimensional function forms. Over the course of the semester students will design and create a cohesive collection of pottery that exemplifies their personal aesthetic. Students are expected to be self-motivated and consistently strive to develop their individual creativity, personal vision, and technical skills. Prerequisite: Ceramics I AND approval of teacher

Ceramics III - Honors, Grades 11-12, Semester, 2.50 credits

823.1 Ceramics III, Honors, Grades 11-12, Semester, 2.50 credits 

Ceramics III is a semester course that builds upon the knowledge gained in both Ceramics I and II. Students will deepen their technical skills and compositional awareness through an exploration of advanced techniques in clay. Pieces produced will include functional-utilitarian wares as well as sculptural or decorative objects. Emphasis will be placed on independent work ethic and a broad exploration of personal aesthetic, conceptual development, and artistic growth. This course is for ceramic artists who are committed to the craft and are eager to work with clay in order to build a strong portfolio of 3-dimensional artwork. Students are expected to be self-motivated and confident in their ceramic abilities with handbuilding as well as wheel throwing. Prerequisite: Ceramics I and II AND approval of teacher
